Visas

As a general rule, if studying in Hong Kong, you will need to obtain a valid student visa/entry permit before arrival. After you are accepted for exchange, your host institution will submit your student visa application to the Hong Kong Immigration Department on your behalf.  It normally takes six weeks or longer to process a student visa application, so it is advised that exchange students apply well in advance to ensure that their visa is issued before the beginning their exchange. Details and procedures of visa applications can be found at the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region here.

For more information on visas, please refer to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China here.

CUHK also provide some helpful advice on obtaining a student visa.

Health and insurance

CUHK provides information on hospitalisation and insurance.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

CUHK offers a one-week orientation programme which covers academic standards, student life, culture, support services and Hong Kong society.

CUHK also offers a buddy program for exchange students to help settle them into Hong Kong life (application required).

CUHK has many extracurricular activities for exchange students. Find out more here.

The Yale-China Chinese Language Centre (CLC) offers Cantonese and Mandarin courses at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Most undergraduate exchange students can take a maximum of 6 units (2 courses) each semester without paying additional tuition fees. Postgraduate exchange students are required to pay tuition for taking Chinese proficiency courses. Find out more here.

Cost of living

CUHK provides some guidance on estimated living costs.

Please note that you are not allowed to work in Hong Kong under the student visa conditions.
