Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB)

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) was established in 1958, the second of the Indian institutes of technology, with help from UNESCO and the then Soviet Union.  It was intended to develop facilities for teaching and research in specialised engineering and technological sciences.  In 1961, by an Act of Parliament, the institute was declared an institution of national importance and was accorded the status of a university with the power to award its own degrees and diplomas.

Academic Highlights 

In the years since it was created, IITB has developed into 15 departments, 20 multi-disciplinary centres, one school of excellence and four interdisciplinary programs.

Location

Located in Powai, one of the northern suburbs of Mumbai, the Institute has the advantage of being in the busy financial capital of India, while at the same time being on a campus known for its natural beauty. It is a fully residential institution as all of its students are accommodated in its 15 hostels with in-house dining; the campus also provides amenities for sports and other recreational facilities.

Did you know?

Due to its proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the IITB campus has significant green cover and is mostly untouched by the pollution of the rest of the city. Its proximity to the national park has also led to occasional sightings of leopards and gharial crocodiles along the banks of Lake Powai.

If nominated to IITB, you will receive application instructions with different documents for students nominated either under or not under  the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Note that Monash exchange students are nominated under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Visas

As a general rule, a student visa is required to study in India. IITB will send a letter of acceptance that will enable you to obtain a visa at the Consulate General of India in Melbourne.  For more information refer to the Consulate's website here. Health and insurance

You will be provided with Out Patient Department access at the IITB Hospital only.  When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, however, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. Check with IITB to ensure that you are covered appropriately.

Orientation and extra-curricular 

Incoming students attend orientation in the first week of the semester (July for Semester 2 or January for Semester 1). See the academic calendar for more detailed dates. IITB will send more information about this to nominated students.
