Indo-Pacific Collaborative Health Immersion Program: Vietnam
Indo-Pacific Collaborative Health Immersion Program: Vietnam
This program is designed as a challenging health immersion opportunity with a focus on broad interprofessional experiences and applying the bio-psycho-social determinants of health with students from mixed professions. Please be aware that this program is not designed to be a clinical placement experience, as it is an interprofessional health immersion program for students to visit and learn about healthcare in the Indo-Pacific..
This experience provides an opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and to extend the scope of your understanding of health on a broader scale. The program may or may not include some interaction with your own profession and this is not the primary focus.
The experience includes challenges such as:
- Interacting with people from a different cultural context
- Engaging in a context where traditional medicine is mainstream
- Engaging with challenging and confronting aspects of conflict and health
- Learning with, from and about professions and practices other than your own.
Monash University has partnered with Reho Study Tours and an in country partner to design and deliver this customised health immersion. The program will combine site visits, university lectures, guest speakers, language lessons and cultural visits - students will spend time in Southern Vietnam gaining invaluable intercultural and collaborative experience to broaden understanding as future healthcare practitioners and deepen personal & professional development.
The itinerary is currently under development
Examples of the kinds of activities may include spending time visiting NGOs, a local University, cultural sites, the Australian Embassy and listening to guest speakers. They will participate in tutorials and language lessons and will stay in a village over the weekend. Please note: the itinerary is subject to change at short notice.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this experience, you should be able to:
- Demonstrate basic skills and understanding of language and culture;
- Explain the importance of cultural responsiveness;
- Identify strengths and challenges in providing health care in the the Indo-Pacific context;
- Discuss the key determinants of health in Indo-Pacific, including the impact of history and conflict;
- Discuss the approach to health promotion in the Indo-Pacific;
- Critically reflect on collaborative interprofessional practice in the provision of health care and public health in the Indo-Pacific and identify the benefits of interprofessional collaboration for your future professional practice.
