Purdue University is a public research university in West Lafayette, Indiana. Founded in 1869, Purdue now has around 40,000 students studying more than 200 majors in 10 different schools. It has one of the largest international student and scholars groups in the US. Purdue has had its own airport since 1934 and has been highly influential in America’s history of aviation.
Academic Highlights
Purdue is internationally renowned for its aviation program and advanced spaceflight technological developments. Twenty-two Purdue graduates have become astronauts, including Neil Armstrong and it was the first university in the world to offer college credit in flight training and a four-year bachelor degree in aviation. Purdue’s Krannert School of Management’s MBA program is also considered one of the best on the planet.
Location
Purdue is located near the western bank of the Wabash River in the state of Indiana, about 100km from both Indianapolis and Chicago. The Purdue campus is the flagship university of the six-campus Purdue University system.
Did you know?
Purdue’s airport is an FAA Part 139 Certificated Airport and was the first university-owned airport in the country. It encompasses 217 hectares divided into airside and landside facilities and is the second largest airport in Indiana. Amelia Earhart was made a visiting faculty member at Purdue and flew above Purdue’s campus in the plane that would eventually disappear with her over the Pacific Ocean.

Purdue's course catalogue
Syllabi (unit guides) can usually be found at Purdue University's department websites (such as Chemistry, Engineering, History and Political Science). Another method of finding unit guides is to Google search your area of study and 'Purdue University syllabus'.
Academic Restrictions
- Undergraduate students are required to study 12 credits minimum, 15 credits maximum (4-5 classes). Note that some Faculties at Monash require students to do a full-time load of 15 US credits to count as 24 Monash credit points. You will need to confirm this with your crediting Faculty.
- Most undergraduate courses are available to exchange students unless the student has not satisfied pre-requisites or if space in class is limited to majors.
- Note that you should choose 100 to 400-level courses. Advanced students may be permitted to take one or two of the 500-level courses.
- You cannot take any 600-level courses, which are for PhD and advanced Master’s students only.

Accommodation
All exchange students can apply for on-campus accommodation with Purdue University. An-campus dorm is the most convenient option, though it is relatively more expensive than sharing an off-campus apartment with other students.

Visas
International exchange students studying in the U.S. must obtain the J-1 Exchange Visitor’s visa before leaving their home country. The application process requires a personal interview at the Consulate.

Health and insurance
All exchange students are required to have insurance.
PU provides further information on medical insurance and the insurance policy for students on the J-1 visa.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
PU organises an orientation program called Weeks of Welcome (WOW), with a series of events to help new incoming international students settle in.
PU has a vibrant student life, with arts and culture, student clubs, an active student convocation organising events on campus, fraternities and sororities, and opportunities to take part in athletics both as a participant and a spectator.
Cost of living
PU estimates that the approximate cost of living for an exchange student over one semester is $7,180 USD for room & board, books, and personal expenses.
Proof of financial support equivalent to $7,180 USD a semester or $14,360 over a year is required as part of your application to Purdue University and for your student visa.
