University of Nebraska - Lincoln

The University of Nebraska (UNL) was established in 1869 and is the state's oldest and largest university. Its eight colleges include agriculture, architecture, business, education, engineering, fine and performing arts, journalism and law. The University is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance and its women’s volleyball and men’s football teams (both known as the Huskers) are among the most successful in the country.

Academic highlight

UNL is renowned for its ground-breaking agricultural research, particularly in the field of agricultural biotechnology. It was the first university in the world to establish an undergraduate psychology laboratory and is home to the esteemed literary magazine, The Prairie Schooner.

Location

UNL’s three campuses are located in Lincoln, the state capital of Nebraska. The grounds include botanical gardens, arboreta and a new multi-million dollar Innovation Centre.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers several housing options to students. You will have the choice of seventeen residence halls, 14 on the City campus and three on the East campus.

UNL offers advice on accommodation here.

Visas

As a general rule, a student visa is required to study in the US.  You will be sent the necessary information by UNL once you have been accepted; more information from UNL is available here.  To obtain a visa you will need to do so through the US Consulate General in Melbourne.

Health and insurance

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, however, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. UNL automatically enrols international students in the local student health insurance plan but it may be possible to have that cost waived. See J-Status Health Insurance Requirement web page for further information.

All UNL students are required to show evidence of measles (Rubela) immunisation. International students must complete a Tuberculosis test after arrival at UNL.

Orientation and extra-curricular

The International Orientation is mandatory.

Aside from orientation, UNL has many welcome events which include meals and social activities. Welcome events are not required, but are encouraged. Find out more here.

For additional pre-arrival information and information on what to expect once you arrive on campus, browse the International Student Guide.
