The University of Waterloo is renowned as one of the most innovative universities in Canada. It has the world’s largest post-secondary co-operative education program where students alternate work and school terms.  It also has one of the largest concentrations of quantum information scientists globally. Founded in 1957, Waterloo has six faculties: Applied Health Sciences, Arts, Engineering, Environment, Mathematics and Science.

Academic Highlights

Waterloo is widely recognised for the excellence of its research work in quantum computing and nanotechnology, clinical psychology, engineering and health services. The Waterloo campus contains the largest faculty of engineering in Canada and the largest actuarial science program in North America.

Location

Waterloo’s main campus is about 110km west of Toronto in Waterloo, Ontario and is built on 404 hectares of former farming land. Other satellite campuses are located in towns in the surrounding region.

Accommodation

Incoming exchange students are provided with various housing options. The availability of on-campus housing options differs between the Fall and Winter semesters. Winter term exchange students are guaranteed a spot if their application is received before November 15. Fall term exchange students are placed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visas

As a general rule, Australian citizens do not need a study permit if they plan to participate in a university exchange program in Canada that lasts no more than six months. Every Australian citizen entering Canada for less than six months, however, will still require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) which can be purchased online.  For more information on visas, please refer to the website of the High Commission of Canada in Australia.

The University of Waterloo also provide some advice on immigration documents.

Health and insurance

All international students must subscribe to the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) which is provided by the University.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular 

The University of Waterloo provides an International Student Guide which contains advice on orientation and everything from immigration and health insurance to study permits and visas.
