Founded in 1885 as a private research university, Yonsei University is one of Korea's three "SKY" universities, which are the most prestigious in the country (the other two are Seoul National University and Korea University).
Academic Highlights
As the most internationalised and liberal institution of higher education in Korea, Yonsei University has the largest international student body, numbering 1,500 exchange students every year. It is particularly well regarded in the fields of Arts and Humanities, Modern Languages, Management and Social Sciences and in innovation.

Yonsei’s main campus is positioned in a spacious, picturesque setting just minutes from the bustling economic and cultural centre of Seoul.

Academic restrictions
- Business courses are restricted to business majors only and students can take a maximum of three business courses under School of Business and Office of International Affairs.
- Due to the popularity of exchange at Yonsei, Monash students can only apply for a one-semester exchange period.
The following are not available for exchange students:
- Medicine / Dentistry / Nursing/ Pharmacy
- Music
- MBA
- Law
- Courses offered at Songdo International Campus
Language requirements
- A limited number of units are taught in English.
- If you plan to take courses taught in Korean, KLAT level 4, or an assessment report by a professor is required. You must also get permission from the professor on the first day of class at Yonsei.
Each course (unit) is usually worth 3 credits at Yonsei University.
The course level can be determined by the course code. If the course code is 1000 level (e.g. IEE1101), the course is considered a General Education and/or Lower Level undergraduate course. From 2000 to 4000, the course is considered a Major and/or Upper Level courses. From 5000 above, the course is classified as a Graduate Course.

Accommodation
On-campus accommodation is available but cannot be guaranteed.

Visas
As a general rule, if you are a student who is not of Korean nationality, you will be required to apply for a D-2 or D-2-8 (for less than a year) student visa via the local Embassy or Consulate, once you have been officially accepted by your host university.

Health and insurance
All incoming exchange & visiting students are obligated to obtain personal health insurance which covers any medical expenses in Korea. Proof of insurance will be required.
Yonsei has further guidance on insurance for exchange students.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
Yonsei provides an orientation program for exchange students called First Step to Korea, organised by the Office of International Affairs, which prepares students for life at the university.
Yonsei has a vibrant campus life for exchange students to participate in, with student organisations, a global lounge, and sport facilities.
Yonsei also offers special Intensive Korean Language Courses for exchange students through the Korean Language Institute. Participation is optional, and students can receive credit for the course.
Cost of living
You should expect to spend approximately 2,000,000 KRW per month while studying at Yonsei.

Exchange students at Yonsei University may be eligible for scholarships, including the New Colombo Plan and the Hamer Scholarship for Intensive Language Study.
Students taking Korean language courses may be eligible for the Walter Mangold Study Abroad Scholarship.
