Meet Kasey – A story of resilience and hope

Kasey grew up in a small fishing and farming town just across the NSW border, where fewer than 300 people call home. A town burdened by drought, intergenerational poverty, and limited access to health and education services, it was a place where hope often felt distant.

Kasey was determined to succeed. She worked tirelessly in school — until, at 16, her world was turned upside down. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer, doctors found three spots on her lungs. The prognosis was bleak.

To access life-saving treatment, Kasey and her mother moved to Melbourne, plunging the family further into financial hardship. Six months of chemotherapy followed, but Kasey’s small rural school couldn’t provide the support or remote learning she needed to keep up with her education. She was forced to repeat Year 11.

The final years of school were isolating and challenging, but Kasey’s spirit remained unbroken. Despite ongoing health complications, she persevered, completing bridging courses and earning a place to study a Bachelor of Science at Monash University.

Problems that students can face can be so multifaceted,” Kasey says. “Even a little bit of help can have such a vast impact on the accessibility of education… I’m in a position to keep pushing forward and contribute and give back.”

Thankfully, because of the kindness of donors, Kasey was awarded multiple scholarships which assisted with relocation costs, accommodation and a living allowance.

Now a graduate, Kasey strives to have a positive impact on the world. She has just secured two new roles - helping shape conservation programs for endangered Australian wildlife, and working as a Biosecurity Officer, protecting natural ecosystems from pests and diseases.

Thank you for ensuring students like Kasey have the bright, fulfilling future they deserve.

Alumni and donors like you really opened the doors of opportunity to me and I will always be grateful for this. Thank you.”
