An Executive Decision

An executive decision

Article by Amanda Hanna | Matheson Society newsletter

As a little girl, Prudence dreamed of being secretary to the boss.

With courage and conviction, an 18-year-old Prudence journeyed from ‘across the ditch’ to pursue her dreams as a Personal Assistant in a time when women were presented with limited career choices, and enjoyed a steadfast career at the executive level for over 40 years.

Prudence contributes her success to her commitment to good, honest, hard work in service of others. This inspired her bequest to Monash, which will establish the Prudence Vernall Scholarships. The program will benefit commencing Monash undergraduate and PhD students pursuing studies in medical research while providing financial support to recipients for the duration of their degree.

Prudence says, “I feel at peace knowing that [these scholarships will] benefit young medical research students who may not have had the opportunity due to lack of financial support.”

To future Prudence Vernall Scholarship recipients, she reflects on her fierce sense of independence and accountability: “It is your responsibility to work hard and pay it forward. Stand on your own two feet and always let your conscience be your guide”.
