Professor Margaret Gardner AC | Matheson Society newsletter
As we come to the end of another year, it is wonderful to reflect on the past 12 months and all that Monash University has achieved – and there is much to celebrate.
I extend a very warm welcome to the new bequestors who have joined our community throughout the year
Among the many highlights in 2022 was the significant improvements in our international rankings, with Monash placing 40th in the US News and World Report Best Global University Rankings, 44th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and being named the number one university in the world in pharmacy and pharmacology; the launch of Monash Commission’s second inquiry report into intermediary cities; Moderna announcing it will build its first mRNA production facility in the Southern Hemisphere within the Monash Technology Precinct; a $30 million philanthropic gift from the David Winston Turner Endowment Fund; and the numerous national and international funding grants and awards received in recognition of our education and research.
The return of face-to-face teaching and learning, and the ability once again to hold in-person events for our community, such as Open Day, graduation ceremonies and live performances. It has been truly wonderful to see our staff and students enjoying the bustling and vibrant atmosphere of our campuses post-COVID.
I was also delighted our Matheson Society members had the opportunity to come to the Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts in May for the annual lunch. I am looking forward to hosting this event in 2023.
Much of our success is due to the many bequestors who have generously left a gift in their will to Monash, to support future leaders and help the University further its education and research excellence and innovation on a global scale.
I also wish to acknowledge Emeritus Professor Malcolm (Mal) Ian Logan AC, the University’s fourth Vice-Chancellor and first President, who sadly died on 17 September aged 91 years. Under his leadership, Monash underwent a radical transformation, emerging as the multinational, multicampus and multicultural University it is today.
I offer my sincere thanks to you all for your continued support and friendship. We look forward to another positive and exciting year ahead.
Professor Margaret Gardner AC
