Monash University’s commitment to advancing Indigenous education and engagement in Australia stretches back 50 years, with the opening of the first dedicated Indigenous Centre at an Australian university.
Since then, the University’s pioneering Indigenous programs, pathways, and engagement have seen bespoke initiatives such as the Growing Indigenous Graduates program affect positive change. Aimed specifically at increasing the number of Indigenous students entering the medical sector, the industry-leading program has witnessed success stories such as Sam and Beau, who were supported throughout their Monash medical degrees, and have now become the first Indigenous interns at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne.
As Beau says of the program, “No matter the day, time, or problem, there was always someone you could call or email to put your mind at ease and help guide you.”
The Growing Indigenous Graduates program is made possible by Monash University’s passionate philanthropic partners. That shared vision is also behind an enriched scholarship program, Kummargi Yulendj (Knowledge is Rising). From 2024, it will build on our existing Achieving Potential Program to provide further support for Indigenous students with fully funded global education opportunities and employment opportunities on campus.
