Our new Vice-Chancellor and President

Professor Sharon Pickering

Following an extensive global search, Professor Sharon Pickering has been appointed Monash University’s 10th Vice-Chancellor and President, commencing on 29 January 2024.

Professor Pickering has been a valued member of the Monash faculty for the past 20 years. From the moment she first joined the University in 2003 as a Lecturer in Criminology, she has created lasting impact. Professor Pickering has held several leadership roles, including Head of Criminology, and Head of School, School of Social Sciences. In 2017 she was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts before becoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President in July 2021. Since August 2023, Professor Pickering has held the role of Acting Provost and Senior Vice-President.

“I am proud of Monash, and proudly Monash,” Professor Pickering said.

“I am honoured to be appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University. This is a special place and I understand what makes the University distinctive. I see the collective and individual efforts of everyone in the Monash community. When we all come together – the researchers, the educators, the students, alumni and staff – we can do great things with the support of our many external stakeholders.

“My commitment is to lead Monash with energy, and in service of the University, our local and global communities to create a joyful place to study, work and create meaningful lasting change.”
