Brian Frary was born in England as the only child to a father with a passion for gardening and a mother with great talent for mathematics.
A diligent student despite leaving school at 16, he pursued further education at night school while working as an analytical chemist. His career progressed in the field of chemistry before a move to Australia in the late 70’s.
Brian spent the next 30 years working in sales and marketing, travelling the world attending exhibitions, presenting at seminars and facilitating training courses and educating fellow chemists on products and instruments.
In his down time Brian enjoyed working on his scale model of Exeter Central Railway Station and flying planes – as a young man he earned his pilot’s licence before his driver’s licence.
Brian left a gift in his Will to Monash to establish two named scholarships in memory of his mother and father. “They always wanted me to stay on at school and go on to university, but they were struggling financially and I felt I had to contribute by getting a job.”
In 2024 the Ivy Frary Scholarship in Mathematics and the Benjamin Frary Scholarship in Plant Sciences will be awarded to deserving students.
I wanted to help undergraduates who have the necessary intellectual ability to complete their Honours degree, but not the financial means. — Mr. Brian Frary
