Investing in the Roots of Our Future

Thanks to a visionary gift from the David Brand Foundation, Monash University is establishing Australia’s first Chair in Natural Capital Investment, charting a new path where financial progress works to safeguard our planet.

A thriving forest full or trees

We often view the environment as a backdrop to our lives. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the landscapes we inhabit. But for Dr David Brand, nature has always been understood as our most vital infrastructure and the foundational asset underpinning our global economy and future.

Today, as this foundation faces pressure from rapid shifts in our climate and ecological decline, the path forward requires visionary action. Through a transformative philanthropic partnership with Dr David Brand, the David Brand Foundation Chair in Natural Capital Investment has been established at Monash University. As Australia’s first Chair of its kind, this gift extends far beyond our University, representing a profound commitment to the long-term health of our planet.

What is Natural Capital Investment?

To understand the true weight of Dr Brand’s gift, we must first look at the world through the lens of natural capital. We are all accustomed to thinking of capital in terms of finance, as the money used to build our economies. Natural capital is the living world’s version of that same principle. It is our planet’s ultimate balance sheet: the collective stock of our soil, air, water, and every living organism.

Think of nature not just as a backdrop, but as our primary infrastructure. Just as a city stalls without a power grid, humanity cannot function without the ecosystem’s services that nature quietly provides and which we often take for granted.

Natural capital investment is the framework that corrects our balance sheet. It shifts our relationship with the earth from extraction to regeneration, proving that economic prosperity and environmental health are not competing forces, but mutually reinforcing ones. By valuing our ecosystems as vital assets, natural capital investment can provide a sustainable roadmap designed to actively drive both environmental and economic growth.

Why it matters now more than ever

The global response to climate change requires more than just hope. It requires a definitive roadmap. Through this profound investment, Dr Brand’s foresight empowers our University to unify its world-class strengths in climate science, sustainability economics, and responsible business to equip governments and industries with the exact tools they need to transition toward an environmentally positive future.

By anchoring the David Brand Foundation Chair in Natural Capital Investment within the Pacific Action for Climate Transitions (PACT) research centre, this gift scales impact far beyond a single campus. It extends directly into the heart of the Indo-Pacific, where the stakes of climate change are highest.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering notes that the Chair reflects Monash’s position as a truly international university.

"At Monash we are committed to being one of the most influential and trusted non-state actors in the Indo-Pacific, contributing to peace and prosperity, and fostering innovation, understanding and connectedness. We have long-standing strengths in climate, sustainability and applied economics research, a distinctive regional footprint of transformative reach and scale, and a track record of delivering high-impact, mission-aligned programs and initiatives,” Professor Pickering said.

Roots for the future

The true measure of Dr Brand’s gift will be felt for generations as it fundamentally transforms how we equip the next wave of global leaders. Professor Simon Wilkie, Dean of Monash Business School, notes that establishing natural capital as a mainstream asset is the missing key to unlocking true nature-based solutions.

The future Chair of Natural Capital Investment will strengthen Monash’s capacity to convert rigorous research into actionable investment frameworks that defend our most vulnerable ecosystems, paving the way for the rest of Australia as the first Chair of its kind across our nation. Ultimately, Dr Brand’s visionary support ensures that intergenerational responsibility moves from an idea, to a reality for the generations to come. It exemplifies that the long-term vitality of nature is a non-negotiable priority when critical decisions are made about our planet’s land, water, and air, and that we can build a resilient economy capable of standing against our rapidly changing climate.
