Thanks to the generous support of the Ng family, Anban can pursue a career in data science.
Three generations of the Ng family have graduated from Monash University. Of Malaysian background, the late Mr Ng Kong Lin valued education, and sent his two children to study at Monash, recognising its innovative teaching methods and diverse community.
The family believes philanthropy is what brings people together and advances our society as a whole. They took a keen interest in supporting under-represented Malaysian students, and sought a way to support disadvantaged Malaysian students with a means to attend university.
“We strongly feel that the best way to change the system lies within the youth, and that life is a journey to continue to seek new knowledge and skills to contribute back to the wider community,” Ms Susan Ng, representative of the Ng Family.
In 2021 the Ng family started the prestigious Ng Kong Lin Family Scholarship, which provides financially disadvantaged students from Malaysia the opportunity to study at Monash. Successful recipients receive tuition fees and related study cost support. Not only does this allow them to study at Monash, but it also gives the recipient the opportunity to immerse themselves in Australian culture.
Philanthropy propels Anban’s future
The inaugural recipient of the Ng Kong Lin Family Scholarship was Anban Ashlan Raj Paul Raj who received a full scholarship to study at Monash University. The generous scholarship covers his entire international student tuition over a four-year period, as well as on-campus accommodation and an annual stipend.
Anban recognises that without the scholarship, university just wouldn’t have been possible for him. It’s given him the motivation to actively engage with Monash, his peers and his studies, as well as providing him with invaluable financial security as he progresses through his Bachelor of Computer Science in Data Science.
“My mother is the sole breadwinner for our family where she financially supports my grandmother and I,” says Anban. “Growing up my childhood was different from that of my peers. What was once a formidable challenge has now become a beacon of hope as it taught me lessons of resilience for a lifetime.
“Receiving the Monash Ng Kong Lin Scholarship has been simply life-changing. This scholarship enabled me to focus on my potential and flourish.”

Anban is excited to see what the future holds for him as he navigates a career in data science. Thanks to the Ng family’s visionary support, the options are endless for him.
“A prominent theme in my life has always been a deep-seated passion for mathematics and applying the discipline in the world around us. That’s why I chose to pursue my degree in data science.
“I chose Monash as it is a world-renowned research university; excellent for Data Science given that it is an uprising discipline with a seemingly never-ending list of possible research options for my honours year and prospectively, subsequent postgraduate degree.”
To the Ng family, Anban would like to extend a sincere thank you.
“Thank you for playing a pivotal role in my journey by believing in me and providing the necessary resources to soar higher.”
