Eka Permanasari, PhD is an Associate Professor in the field of urban design, architecture and Southeast Asian Studies. Currently, she is an adjunct Associate Professor at Monash Art, Design and Architecture, Monash University Australia. She has extensive experience in research and is a professional in the fields of architecture and urban design in Indonesia, Australia and Germany.

Apart from being active in research, Dr. Permanasari is also a professional urban designer. She has led several strategic national projects for Jakarta Government, such as Jakarta Giant Sea Wall, 6 Pilot Projects of Community Centers (Ruang Publik Terpadu Ramah Anak - abbreviated as RPTRA) in Jakarta, the integration of Jakarta MRT and LRT lines and Jakarta TOD urban renewal projects. She also helped the former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama to form the content of Governor Decree No 196, 2015 about RPTRA's management and organization.

Dr. Permanasari has led several community-based development projects. She was involved the community from the design phase until the construction of the 6 RPTRA pilot projects. This successful participatory design project was then implemented throughout 289 RPTRAs in Jakarta. Apart from serving the Jakarta Governor, Dr Permanasari has supported the state-owned company Perumnas in revitalizing the public housings in Kemayoran and Klender.

Dr Permanasari has  received 2 years funding from Nelson Institute for Diplomacy and International Affairs Research Grant, Drake University, USA (2020-2022) for Cross-cultural Community-based Strategies for Sustainable Urban Streams: Lessons from Des Moines and Jakarta; 3 years funding from Humboldt Research Linkage Program, Humboldt Alumni Award (2020-2024) for Cooperation for Sustainable Urbanization: Managing Urban Expansion in Asia - The Case of the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (Jabodetabek) in Indonesia; 3 years research funding from Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology (2017-2020) to analyse the sense of community belonging towards Jakarta Community center (RPTRA) in Gandaria Selatan.

Other achievements highlight her qualifications such as: the Best Lecturer Award from LLDIKTI IV (2018) and Newton Fund from the British Council (2016). Dr Permanasari’s recent publication appears on a book chapter titled ‘The Production of Megaprojects in Java: Colonialism, Nationalism, Development Centralism Vs. Decentralization’ in In Sintusingha, S, et all. International Perspectives on the Belt and Road Initiatives: A Bottom-up approaches. London: Routledge (2021). Dr. Permanasari currently resides in Berlin, Germany.
