Undergraduate applicants
Undergraduate applicants can satisfy Monash University’s English language proficiency requirements without an IELTS or TOEFL score if they meet specific secondary education or foundational program criteria.
Secondary education in an approved English-speaking country
- Requirement: Completion of at least six years of secondary schooling at an English-medium school located within a Monash-approved English-speaking country.
- Age limit: All six years of study must be completed before you turn 19 years of age.
- Required documentation: Official high school transcripts showing continuous enrollment, your graduation certificate, and a copy of your passport.
Senior secondary and international curriculum
- Requirement: Achieving a specified minimum grade in an approved, recognised English subject.
- Examples of accepted standards:
- VCE (Australia): A study score of 25 or higher in English.
- International Baccalaureate (IB), A-Levels or Advanced Placement (AP): Meeting the minimum course or faculty-specific grade thresholds
- Required documentation: Final official results slips issued directly by the relevant examinations board.
Postgraduate applicants
Postgraduate waivers are assessed based on prior tertiary (university) education. Secondary school qualifications are generally insufficient to waive English requirements for master's or PhD programs.
Degrees from an approved English-speaking country
- Requirement: Completion of a recognized tertiary qualification (such as a bachelor's or master's degree) comprising at least half a year of full-time study in an English medium institution (equivalent to 24 Monash credit points). a minimum of two years of full-time study or equivalent to at least 24 Monash credit points .
- Location: The qualification must be completed within a Monash-approved English-speaking nation (e.g., the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland).
- Validity period: Studies must be completed within five years of your intended course commencement date at Monash.
- Required documentation: Your official degree certificate and complete academic transcripts.
Degrees from English-medium institutions overseas
- Requirement: If your tertiary studies were completed in a country where English is not the primary language, your specific course and institution must be officially registered as entirely taught and assessed in English.
- Verification: Monash verifies institutional language settings using the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
- Required documentation: Complete academic transcripts accompanied by an official Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter. This letter must be stamped by your home institution’s Registrar office and explicitly state that the entire program was conducted and examined in English.
