Urban Design Competition

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming research-based competition on urban design and the creation of happy digital cities. The competition aims to encourage innovative and sustainable solutions that reflect the way people live in urban areas, while placing happiness at the forefront of urban planning and design.

The competition is built around the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on creating happy cities that can coexist and thrive in the digital age. We believe that urban design should reflect the evolving needs of the community, while ensuring the happiness and well-being of citizens.

Participants will be required to submit Extended Abstract and Research Poster, Concept Master plan (3D Visioning), Poster Presentation that explore the challenges and opportunities of designing happy digital cities.

Proposals should address issues such as urbanization, climate change, and social inequality, while incorporating innovative and sustainable design solutions that prioritize happiness and well-being.

We welcome participants from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, including urban planning, architecture, engineering, social sciences, and technology. Participants can work individually and are encouraged to think creatively and push the boundaries of urban design and planning.

The competition will be judged by a panel of experts from academia, industry, and government, who will evaluate submissions based on their originality, feasibility, and impact on creating happy digital cities. Winners will receive a full scholarship for master of urban design in Monash University, Indonesia in addition cash prizes, as well as opportunities for further collaboration and development of their proposals.

Overall, we hope this competition will inspire participants to think critically about the role of urban design in creating happy, sustainable, and equitable cities in the digital age. We look forward to receiving your submissions and working together to create a better future for urban living.

Competition Requirement:

  • Maximum 5 years working experiences or minimum in semester 7 for university students
  • Submit following files :
    1. Extended Abstract and Research Poster
    2. Concept Master plan (3D Visioning) Poster Presentation

Please make sure before join the competition you have met following requirement needed for Monash University, Indonesia Scholarship

  • A Design Project Portfolio The Design Portfolio should be up to 20 pages and include a range of design projects that:· Demonstrate excellent design and visual communication skills and appropriate ability in presentation · Have a good level of computer aided design software and computer literacy more broadly (including proficiency in editing and publishing software such as Adobe Indesign; proficiency in visual and presentation software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator).
  • Graduated from an Indonesian accreditation A and B Bachelor's degree with a GPA of 2,9, or Indonesian accreditation C with a GPA of 3,5, or an equivalent qualification, in a cognate discipline. *Relevant disciplines include architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, and civil engineering.

Alex Lechner

Professor, Urban Design

Dr Alex Lechner is a landscape ecologist and Professor, teaching on the Master of Urban Design. He has over a decade of international experience conducting research and teaching on the applications of interdisciplinary approaches to urban sustainability, environmental science and geospatial analyses. Find out more.


  1. 1st winner will get Full Scholarship for Master of Urban Design at Monash University, Indonesia + IDR 10 Million cash.
  2. 2nd Winner will get 50% Scholarship for Master of Urban Design at Monash University, Indonesia + IDR 5 Million cash.
  3. 3rd Winner will get 30% Scholarship for Master of Urban Design at Monash University, Indonesia + IDR 3 Million cash.

*all scholarship is for October 2023 Intake, except if the awardee unable to study due to still on bachelor program
