Save the date! Monash University, Indonesia, and Sinar Mas Land are collaborating to present a research-based urban design competition in Indonesia
The research-based urban design competition held by Monash University, Indonesia, and Sinar Mas Land aims to encourage the emergence of superior ideas about Happy Digital Cities development designs supported by digital technology.
BSD City, August 2nd, 2023 - Monash University, Indonesia, in collaboration with Sinar Mas Land, held a research-based urban design competition with the City of Happiness in the Digital World theme. This competition is open to final-year students and professionals with a maximum of two years of work experience, which aims to encourage participants' creativity in designing sustainable urban architecture and layouts which support the development of happy digital cities in Indonesia. The top 3 (three) winners will win total cash prizes worth IDR 18 million and full scholarships worth 600 Million to join Monash University, Indonesia's Urban Design postgraduate program. In addition, later on, all the winners and their proposals will also be involved in constructing the Sinar Mas Land area in the independent city of BSD City, South Tangerang.
Through an urban design competition, Monash University, Indonesia, and Sinar Mas Land are trying to encourage the conception of fresh ideas for creating Happy Digital Cities in Indonesia to address the problems of urbanization, climate change, and social inequality. In addition, Monash University, Indonesia, and Sinar Mas Land also hope to become the spearhead of creating innovative, smart, and sustainable urban planning designs that align with the aspirations of the happiness and welfare of the Indonesian people.
Carrying a concept that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target, this urban design competition requires all participants to submit Extended Abstracts and Research Posters, Concept Masterplans in three dimensions, as well as Presentation Posters that aim to explore challenges and opportunities in designing happy digital cities.
Eka Permanasari, Associate Professor of Urban Design at Monash University, Indonesia, said she was optimistic that this competition would become a platform to generate superior ideas about the integration of digital-based smart cities and to accommodate spatial needs that support increasing the happiness and welfare index of its citizens, for today and in the future.
“Monash University, Indonesia, believes that this country has many talented architects and urban designers who always prioritize innovative designs. Therefore, we hope that this competition can inspire participants to think critically about the role of urban design in creating happy, sustainable, and just cities amid today's rapid growth in the digital era," said Eka.

The Urban Design Competition 2023, added Irawan, was held to find the best talents in the country to collaborate in designing an innovative and highly competitive city. “We want to involve designers (master planners), architects, and other related professionals to convey their new ideas and creative solutions to existing urban problems. Together, we can develop independent cities that are environmentally friendly, sustainable, and provide a better quality of life for residents and society in general," he explained.
The Sinar Mas Land development area highlighted in this urban design competition is a new commercial center called Digital Hub, located at one of the strategic points of the famous planned community of BSD City. The Digital Hub will be a home for Indonesia's leading technology companies and startups and a center of interaction for digital industry players to exchange ideas and collaborate in creating innovative and high-performance business opportunities. The Digital Hub is also integrated with the surrounding educational and entertainment facilities, such as the Knowledge Hub, Digital Loft, and City Forest.
The deadline for submission of urban design proposals will be open until August 18th, 2023. All bids will be assessed by a panel of experts consisting of academics, industry players, and government agencies who will evaluate proposals based on the originality of the idea, feasibility, and impact on the construction of happy digital cities. The top 3 winners will be announced on August 26th, 2023.
