Monash University, Indonesia welcomes Southeast University delegation

BSD City, Tangerang – On Wednesday 15 July 2026, Monash University, Indonesia welcomed visitors from Southeast University (SEU), China. The team met at our Jakarta campus to discuss new plans to expand our teaching and research across Southeast Asia. Our collaborative relationship with SEU has been robust. We manage a successful joint school in Suzhou, China. The visit allows us to build on those deep foundations.

The discussion focused on three primary goals, namely, advancing joint research initiatives, promoting cross-border academic exchange, and driving sustainable innovation across Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region. We believe that global networks help solve local problems. This meeting marks a vital step forward for both universities.

The story of our Suzhou partnership

Our joint work began more than a decade ago. In 2012, we set up the Southeast University-Monash University Joint International School. The school operates in Suzhou, a major economic hub in China.

The Chinese government approved this as the first joint graduate school in the country. We wanted to combine the best of both institutions. The school focuses on science, engineering, and data technology. Students can earn degrees from both universities. This dual approach gives them a massive advantage in the job market.

Southeast University is a top and highly selective university in China. It attracts highly academically competitive students into its undergraduate programs through the national Gaokao system. The first cohort of 300 SEU-Monash joint undergraduate engineering students will commence at SEU in September 2026.

The students will undertake their first two years of study in Suzhou before transferring to Monash University’s Australian campuses to complete their degrees.
