BSD City, Tangerang - Monash University becomes the first foreign campus in Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the realm of higher education. The prestigious Australian institution has officially inaugurated its campus in BSD City, Tangerang Selatan, Banten on Thursday (14/4/2022).
As the first foreign university to operate in Indonesia, Monash University, Indonesia will enable research collaborations and partnerships with the Indonesian academic community, advanced professional development for graduates and commercial opportunities for industry.
“I’m thrilled to see a world-class Australian university such as Monash officially open a campus in Indonesia, bringing new opportunities for high impact research and expanded academic offerings. As the first foreign university to set up in Indonesia, Monash is paving the way in forging stronger education and people-to-people ties with Indonesia,” said Ms Penny Williams, Australian Ambassador to Indonesia.
Active Since 2021
Officially operational since October 2021, Monash University, Indonesia embodies the commitment of Monash University and the Indonesian government to generate knowledge that can contribute significantly to the development of the social, technological, and economic sectors in Indonesia.
Monash University, Indonesia initially offered master’s and PhD programs in diverse fields particulary in Business Innovation, Global Business, Data Science, Public Policy, Urban Design, Cybersecurity, Public Health, Marketing and Digital Communications, and Sustainability. In September 2025, the university also offers bachelor’s programs in Digital Business, Information Technology, and Design.
In addition, Monash University, Indonesia also offers a range of executive and micro-credential programs tailored for specific sectors. Monash University, Indonesia boasts state-of-the-art learning facilities that adhere to Monash University Australia's standards.

"The curriculum, standards, exams, and student experience are all the same. So whatever is developed in Indonesia adheres to the same standards. If students choose to enroll in the Australian branch, it will be exactly the same as studying in Indonesia," explained Margaret Gardner AC, Former Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University Australia, who currently serves as the Governor of Victoria.
Furthermore, upon graduation, alumni of Monash University, Indonesia will receive the same advantages as those from Monash University Australia.
"Students will receive a single degree from Monash University, not Monash University, Indonesia. This provides a valuable edge for alumni in the job market, having studied at one of the world's top universities," stated Margaret.
2. Collaboration with Various Institutions and Industries
"Monash has collaborated with various institutions in Indonesia, including the government and other universities, for the development of students," said Professor Andrew MacIntyre, Former Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University Indonesia, who is now succeeded by Professor Matthew Nicholson.
Despite being established just last year in 2021, Monash University, Indonesia has already forged partnerships with a range of institutions to enhance education. The relevant institutions involved in these collaborations include:
- In partnership with Tokopedia, Monash is delivering high impact research collaboration on machine learning and demand forecasting.
- In partnership with Traveloka, Monash is delivering training opportunities for Indonesian university lecturers striving to support Indonesia’s goal for reaching nine million digital talents by 2035.
- Monash has partnered with Bank Mandiri to deliver advanced training for cohorts of emerging leaders in data science and business innovation.
- Parallel to this, Monash is actively building partnerships with a range of Indonesian universities, starting in its home province of Banten where it has formed a dynamic collaboration with UNTIRTA, featuring joint research work on community development and eco-tourism.
3. Various Scholarships Available, Including LPDP
