Mou Signing between Bappenas and Monash University, Indonesia to Strengthening Cooperation in ASN Resource Development

Jakarta, 5 February 2024 - A momentous event took place at the Bappenas Building in Taman Suropati, Jakarta, as the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas and Monash University, Indonesia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The ceremony brought together important figures including Professor Andrew MacIntyre (The President of Monash University, Indonesia), Bapak Pungkas Bahjuri Ali (Expert Staff for Social Affairs and Poverty Alleviation at Bappenas), Bapak Wignyo Adiyoso (Head of the Center for Development, Education and Training of Planners at Bappenas), Professor Stephen Cairns (Senior lecturer of Urban Design Program at Monash University, Indonesia, Alyas Widita (Assistant Professor and Course Coordinator of Urban Design Program at Monash University, Indonesia), and Ika Idris (Associate Professor of Public Policy and Management Monash University, Indonesia).

Bapak Pungkas Bahjuri Ali took the stage to deliver his speech at the event.
"Bappenas, as the driving force behind National Development in Indonesia, recognizes the crucial role of investing in resource development to support the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045," said Pungkas. On this occasion, Pungkas appreciated Monash University, Indonesia for its commitment to increasing opportunities for Indonesian citizens to gain hands-on learning experiences and broaden their global horizons.
Bappenas and Monash University have had a history of collaboration since 2012, one of which is through the SPIRIT (Scholarship Program for Strengthening the Reforming Institution) and SSMP AAI (Split Site Master Program Australia Awards Indonesia) programs. Currently, two Bappenas employees are enrolled in the Master of Public Policy and Management program in Monash University, Indonesia through a co-financing partnership scheme. "Bappenas hopes to expand this cooperation program in the scope of activities and target participants so that it can support the synchronisation process at the central and regional levels," added Pungkas.

On this occasion, Andrew said that the existence of Monash University, Indonesia was an opportunity to strengthen and intensify collaboration between Monash University and Bappenas. Monash University, Indonesia currently offers six master's programs including Data Science, Urban Design, Business Innovation, Public Policy and Management, Public Health, and Cybersecurity. In 2024, additional master's programs in Sustainability and Marketing and Digital Communication will be introduced, followed by the Smart Transportation Systems and Infrastructure Management program in 2025. "Monash University, Indonesia will continue to strive for valuable collaboration with the Indonesian government and companies. This effort was made primarily to support Indonesia's economic future," said Andrew.
Course coordinator as well as Assistant Professor of the Urban Design Study Program Alyas Widita, said that the urban design study program offered by Monash University, Indonesia emphasises an interdisciplinary approach, special qualitative analysis, and combines many backgrounds and methodologies.
Ika Idris, Associate Professor in Public Policy and Management program, emphasised that in reality, many departments within Bappenas have become stakeholders for Monash University. One notable example is the Connection program (project Koneksi), which addresses climate change resilience issues.

Andrew reiterated Monash University, Indonesia's strong desire to contribute to Indonesia's development. He stated, "Today marks a significant moment that lays the foundation for closer collaboration between Monash University, Indonesia and Bappenas through the signing of the MoU."
