Empowering PLN Employees: Student Orientation for Double-Degree Program at Monash University, Indonesia and Australia

Jakarta, 21 March 2024 – Monash University, Indonesia recently hosted a student orientation for 30 employees from PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) Persero, Indonesia's state-owned electric utility company.
During their academic journey, the PLN employees selected for the program will have the opportunity to study for one year at Monash University, Indonesia, pursuing a Master of Business Innovation program. Following this, they will continue their studies for another one year at Monash University, Australia, focusing on the Master of Engineering program. This dual-degree program offers a unique and comprehensive educational experience, allowing the students to gain expertise in both business innovation and engineering disciplines.
Prior to their enrollment, they completed the Monash English Bridging program to enhance their English skills and meet university standards. This article highlights the objectives of the orientation and provides an overview of the workshops that will further support their academic journey.

Why Does PLN Collaborate with Monash University?
PLN and Monash University have an MoU in academic agreement for Energy Transition Capacity Enhancement. This double-degree program will prepare future leaders of PLN with business and technical competencies to support PLN's transformation in facing energy transition and create a competitive advantage for PLN by developing the necessary future competencies to enhance corporate competitiveness.
Ibu Riziki Yayu Feberina, Manager Expertise Development at PLN, explained the reason why they choose collaboration with Monash University.
“Monash University, as the largest university in Australia and ranked among the top 50 universities in the world, offers the double-degree program that are integrated with a global network and industrial connections, providing the best internship opportunities for PLN students,” said Ibu Riziki who is familiarly called Kiki.
By collaborating with Monash University, it is expected to support the Future Leaders Program of PLN - Monash University by producing competent leaders in the fields of Business and Technical through the offered programs. This collaboration aims to provide employees with exposure during their educational activities and yield positive impacts from the partnership between the two parties, ” added her.
Objectives of the Orientation
The orientation aimed to accomplish the following objectives, the first to welcome the PLN students to the campus. The event commenced by creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere, introducing faculty members, staff, and fellow students. This fostered a sense of belonging and camaraderie within the Monash community.
Second, to introduce available student support and academic services. Students were acquainted with the student support services and academic resources at Monash. This ensured they were well-informed and equipped to progress successfully in their studies.
Highlights from the Orientation
Welcoming remarks by Professor Matthew Nicholson
The orientation, held on 21st March 2024, included informative sessions presented by esteemed academics and staff members. Some noteworthy presentations were:
- Introduction to Monash Indonesia: Dr Ivan Butar, Vice President (Education), provided an overview of the university's history, mission, vision, and academic programs. This session aimed to instil pride and a sense of belonging among the PLN students.
- Introduction to Sexual Abuse and Sexual Harassment (SASH) at Monash: Dr Gabriela Fernando, Assistant Professor of Public Health, raised awareness about safety, consent, and respectful behavior on campus. Students were informed about available resources, reporting procedures, and preventive measures, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
- Master of Business Innovation (MBI) Course and Learning Structure: Professor Edward Buckingham, Course Director of MBI, along with Course Coordinator Yessy Arnold, provided insights into the MBI program's curriculum and learning structure.
- Introduction to Learning and Teaching at Monash: Anddy Steven, Senior Manager of Learning and Teaching Operations, highlighted Monash's pedagogical approach and innovative teaching methodologies. Students gained insights into fostering an inclusive learning environment, leveraging technology, and promoting student engagement.
- Getting to Know the Student Academic Success: Fauzul Aufa, Learning Adviser, introduced students to the Student Academic Success team and discussed study strategies, time management, effective communication, and academic resources.
- Understanding Student and Academic Services at Monash: Felicia Margaretha, Senior Student and Services Officer, and Angie Tjahjadi, Student Service Officer, provided an overview of various support services available, emphasising the importance of seeking assistance when needed.

This orientation also received some positive feedback from the participants. Nario Anggoro, one of the PLN employees who was selected for this program, said “The orientation was very helpful. Because we received useful information from the speakers especially regarding campus introduction, curriculum and learning structure, as well as, student support services.”
Workshops for Future Readiness
Following the orientation, the students will participate in workshops conducted by the Student Experience Operation and Learning and Teaching Operation (LTO) teams. These workshops will further enhance their skills and knowledge. The workshops include:

- Introduction to Academic Writing
- Structuring Business Recommendations with Minto Approach
- Searching and Managing References
- Learning with Monash: Technology & Policy
- Mindful Implementation: Harnessing Generative AI with Integrity
These workshops, scheduled for 21st, 26th, and 28th March 2024, aim to equip the students with the necessary tools to succeed academically and professionally.
