Series #1 - Urban Design Approaches towards Climate Change Resilience View

Overview

Countries in Southeast Asia are rapidly urbanising with approximately 66% of the population projected to reside in urban areas in 2050, compared to 51% in 2021 and 16% in 1950. The challenge of urbanisation is further magnified by climate change, as countries in the region such as Indonesia are some of the most vulnerable globally.

Designing and planning for climate change requires cities to adapt to increased hydrometeorological hazards such as flooding and heat waves and decarbonizing our cities through green and sustainable transport and building design. Given the urgency of the climate change challenges, transformational change is needed in Indonesia, fundamentally changing urban ecological, technical, economic, and social systems while still supporting sustainable development

Overview

This seminar aims to explore the complex relationship between urban environments and nature, focusing on the Indonesian context. It will explore the role of nature in urban settings, the loss of human interactions with nature and the impact of biodiversity loss. We will identify approaches to plan and design cities that integrate nature, in particular through the application of Nature-based Solutions.

The seminar will feature a diverse group of international and local speakers, including urban designers, ecologists, and social scientists. You will gain a deeper understanding on creating cities that support both human well-being and biodiversity.

Urbanisation for sustainable futures is one of today's greatest challenges. President Joko Widodo envisions future cities as 'green, smart, creative, livable,' and above all, 'lovable.' In Banten, a province where most residents live in rural areas with high poverty rates, the urban population is expected to grow by 4 million by 2045, Indonesia's centenary year. Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Practice: Lessons Learned from International Case Studies Towards Indonesia NZE Building and Precinct Pathways

Overview

Indonesia faces the dual challenge of contributing to and being affected by climate change, making carbon reduction and resilience in urban design and architecture crucial. NZEP and NZEB are key to sustainable development, integrating innovation and promoting behavioral change while delivering economic and environmental benefits, in line with global trends.

Achieving nearly zero carbon emissions requires strengthened governance. Indonesia's Urban Design Guidelines (PUPR Regulation 6/2007) and Green Building and Precinct (PUPR Regulation 21/2021) need further refinement and alignment with global best practices to better guide development.

This event will present findings and analyses of NZEP and NZEB in the Indonesian context, particularly their integration with current regulations and international case studies. The event will highlight the need for consensus on the definition and indicators of NZEP and NZEB, from governance, technical, and market perspectives, for successful adoption in Indonesia.

GIS for Nature in Cities: Mapping Urban Futures

This seminar is part of the MUST (Enabling Multi-species Transitions) initiative, which explores how urban environments can better support diverse forms of life. The event highlights innovative uses of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial modelling to understand and shape urban ecological futures.

The seminar is structured around two thematic panels. The first focuses on hydrological systems, climate resilience, and the application of UAV thermal imaging to assess urban stream ecosystems. The second panel examines urban forest monitoring, ecological connectivity modelling, and flood mapping using deep learning and remote sensing.

Together, these sessions demonstrate how spatial technologies are transforming our capacity to map, analyse, and design for nature in cities. They support biodiversity, enhance resilience, and inform more inclusive planning for multi-species urban futures.
