ATI5069 Field Studies in Urban Policy and Governance: Jakarta and Depok

About the program
ATI5069 Field Studies in Urban Policy and Governance is coordinated by the Master of Public Policy and Management program at Monash University, Indonesia. Since its initial delivery in July 2024, the unit in 2026 will mark its third iteration in Jakarta and inaugural implementation in Depok City, West Java. It provides a field-based approach to examining the policy and governance challenges associated with urban transformation in developing contexts, with particular emphasis on the Greater Jakarta Area—one of the largest urban agglomerations globally. Through immersive engagement, students are introduced to the complexities of policymaking within diverse, multilayered governance structures.
Students will acquire direct insights into the dilemmas faced by urban administrators in critical domains such as gender equity, public health, and spatial justice. Structured interactions with local governments, community organizations, private sector actors, and civil society groups, complemented by site visits, will facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the institutional and practical dimensions of urban governance.
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced analytical and applied competencies for critically engaging with complex urban policy challenges.
- Integrate perspectives from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to evaluate the dynamics of urban transformation in developing contexts.
- Apply theoretical frameworks to practical governance dilemmas, particularly within multilayered and diverse institutional environments.
- Assess policy problems in critical domains such as gender equity, public health, and spatial justice through field-based inquiry.
- Translate field immersion experiences into actionable insights that inform policy design and implementation in complex governance settings.
Join us for a distinctive learning journey that will expand your perspectives and equip you to excel as a policy practitioner. Positioned at the forefront of today’s most urgent and complex urban governance challenges, this unit offers an unparalleled opportunity to deepen your expertise and prepare for impactful practice in diverse policy environments.
