What happens if I don't return a library loan on time?

Lost and overdue loans

Items must be returned on time to ensure everyone can access the materials they need. 24 hour returns are available at all our libraries. You can use the inside returns chute to return borrowed items at any of our libraries during opening hours.

If you can’t return items on time, come in and talk to us, contact us by email at librarians@monash.edu or by phone +61 3 9905 5054.

When an item is overdue, you cannot borrow or place a request, and your loans will no longer be automatically renewed. Return your overdue books to resume these activities.

Most items renew automatically. To find out if your item has been renewed, sign in to the library website, or go to the Library in your my.Monash portal, to check the current status of your loan. Check out our Borrowing page to learn more about borrowing, renewals and returns.

Not sure when your Library loans are due?

Sign in to Search and select My Loans to check due dates, view fees, and place and cancel requests. Alternatively, sign into My Monash, navigate to the Library tile and select the My Account tab to view any current, recalled or overdue loans. If you are unsure, ask us.

Can’t find your Library loan?

We get it - life happens! Chat with one of our friendly library team members to discuss your options. This can be done in person, via email, phone or even on live chat. Choose whichever contact option works best for you.

A lost item fee of $25, plus the cost of the item, may be charged to cover the cost of losing something from the collection. Unpaid fees may encumber your University record. This means a block has been placed on your University account - and not just your library account. Please see this comprehensive guide on encumbrances and how to avoid them.

How do I pay a fee?

For payment options, see How to pay your fee.

After you have paid, remember to show library staff your receipt so we can remove the block on your account.
