Establish your Google Scholar profile

Researchers are typically expected to maintain both a Google Scholar profile and an ORCID.

Google Scholar is an academic search engine that indexes scholarly publications such as research articles, conference papers, books, theses and patents.

You can create a free Google Scholar profile to collect your publications from the web. Google Scholar profile also shows citation metrics such as citation counts, h-index and i10-index. These help you track the impact of your work.

Employers, industry and grant reviewers often use Google Scholar to find researchers. Keep your profile up to date so your work is accurate and easy to find.

Create a Google Scholar profile

To create a Google Scholar profile, go to scholar.google.com and select ‘My Profile’ in the top left corner. If you don’t have an account yet, you will be prompted to create one.

  1. Use a personal Google account to create your profile. Do not use your Monash account, as you may lose access if you move institutions.
  2. Add your Monash email address to verify your affiliation. This makes your profile eligible to appear in Google Scholar search results.
  3. Make your profile public. This option is not selected by default and allows your profile to appear when people search for your name.
  4. Set up alerts to be notified when your work is cited. To do this, click the ‘Follow’ button next to your name, tick the ‘New citations to my articles’ box, and click ‘Done’.

Maintain your Google Scholar profile

If your profile updates automatically, it may add incorrect entries, which can affect your citation count. Check your profile regularly to ensure your publications list is accurate.

You can turn off automatic updates and review changes before they are added. To do this, go to ‘Menu’ > ‘Configure article updates’ and select the confirmation email option.

You can also manually add missing articles or remove publications that are not yours.

For more information on setting up and managing your profile, see the Google Scholar Profiles documentation. Note that Google does not offer dedicated support for Google Scholar.

Add Google Scholar publications to ORCID

There is no way to sync your Google Scholar profile with your ORCID automatically. You need to export a BibTeX file from Google Scholar and import it into the Works section of your ORCID profile.

Track citations

Use your Google Scholar profile to check the following metrics:

  • article citation counts
  • your h-index (author productivity indicator)
  • i10-index (a metric specific to Google Scholar showing the number of publications with 10 or more citations).

See the Research metrics and impact guide to learn more about measuring your work’s impact.
