Interlibrary loans

We can support you to access materials for your study or research through our network of libraries and commercial suppliers.

It is a free service and there is no need to register.

Who can use this service

You can access physical and electronic interlibrary loans if you're

  • Monash University staff
  • Graduate students (excluding online)
  • Undergraduate honours student

You can access electronic interlibrary loans if you're

  • Staff or student from Monash Indonesia
  • Online graduate student

Malaysia staff and postgraduates can request access via your home library.

If your request is really urgent (i.e. required within the next couple of days) it's a good idea to contact us to discuss your options.

How our interlibrary loan service works

You can access material from around the world with our service. This includes:

  • Loans or electronic copies of materials from non-Monash University libraries
  • Digital copies of print-only material held at any Monash University Library

Place a request via our form. Physical items will be sent to your nominated branch.

Off-campus students or staff can request we send the item to your home address – just select ‘personal delivery’. You'll need to pay for return postage, or you can  choose to return items in-person at any of our libraries.

The loan period and whether loans may be renewed is set by the lending library. You can request loan renewals via the Document Delivery portal or by contacting us. It is a manual process, so be sure to allow enough time.

Finally, keep the bookstrap with your loan – it’s what enables us to update your library record when you return your item.

You can track the status of your requests via our Document Delivery portal.

Copyright

Some loan requests will be restricted by copyright. For example, if the book is available to buy then we can only supply one chapter or 10% of the book – whatever is greater.

Electronic copies may only be used for study or research, not any other purpose (including teaching). If you need copies of material for teaching, please use the Readings Service instead.

If you want two articles from the same journal you will need to create two forms.
You may only request more than one article from the same issue if they are for the same research or course of study.

Troubleshooting

When using the request form you need to log in with your Monash username and password.

Check your spam folder for monash.document.delivery@au.relais-host.com if you don’t receive our email.

The eSolutions Service Desk can help you if you are unable to access the electronic resources.
