Who can use this service

You can access physical and electronic interlibrary loans if you're

  • Monash University staff
  • Graduate students (excluding online and coursework)
  • Undergraduate honours student

You can access electronic interlibrary loans if you're

  • Staff or student from Monash Indonesia
  • Online graduate student

Malaysia staff and postgraduates can request access via your home library.

How do I place requests?

  • Go to Library Search
  • Sign in with your Monash staff or student account
  • Search for the book or article you need
  • A message at the top of your search results will invite you to expand your search - click the link to include results from outside Monash in your search
  • Click on one of the results and click “Get a physical copy” or “Get a digital chapter/article” to request the item
  • If there’s no record for the item you want, you can also enter details of the item manually by clicking “Interlibrary loan” from the top menu. Make sure to include as much information as possible, as this will help us get the item to you faster.

Physical Loans will be sent to your nominated branch.

How our interlibrary loan service works

You can access material from around the world with our service. This includes:

  • Loans or electronic copies of materials from non-Monash University libraries
  • Digital copies of print-only material held at any Monash University Library in Australia

Off-campus students or staff can request we send the item to your home address – just select ‘personal delivery’. You'll need to pay for return postage, or you can  choose to return items in-person at any of our libraries.

The loan period and whether loans may be renewed is set by the lending library so be sure to allow enough time. You can request loans renewals when signed in to Search through “My Account” .

Electronic copies have an expiry date of 90 days, with a maximum of 10 downloads. Please access and save your request within the expiry period.

Finally, keep the bookstrap with your loan – it’s what enables us to update your library record when you return your item.

Copyright

Some loan requests will be restricted by copyright. For example, if the book is available to buy then we can only supply one chapter or 10% of the book – whatever is greater.

Electronic copies may only be used for study or research, not any other purpose (including teaching). If you need copies of material for teaching, please use the Readings Service instead.

Expert tip

If you want two articles from the same journal you will need to create two forms.
You may only request more than one article from the same issue if they are for the same research or course of study.
