MED5101 Applied studies in medical research and professional practice
Registration Only Form: this form is only for Monash Medical students who have been approved by the School of Medicine, to complete their MED5101 Scholarly Intensive Placement overseas.
If you are a PhD student wishing to do research overseas towards your degree, refer to the Graduate Research website for more information.
Monash medical students who previously completed their BMedSc(Hons) research project at one of the two locations below, may have the opportunity to return and contribute to further research study for their MED5101 rotation.
- in Bioethics at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford, UK*
or
- Newcastle University, UK.
* It is important to note, that BMedSc(Hons) students returning to their Honours supervisors at the University of Oxford, can only return for a maximum of 4-weeks (longer periods would require students to register and pay enrolment fees at Oxford).
Participating in these overseas projects is subject to:
- availability and approval by staff at Oxford University, or Newcastle University
- approval by the Director of Medical Student Research, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences after liaising with Monash and overseas staff to ensure the proposed research project is suitable; and
- being in good standing at Monash University.
Program Costs
Students must be enrolled in the Monash BMedSc/MD degree: M6011 or M6018.In addition to the Monash tuition fee for this course, students should consider the following program related expenses in preparing their budget:
- return flights and transfers;
- accommodation;
- food and drink;
- personal expenses; and
- any additional travel expenses.
Travel Insurance
All students "Approved to Travel" on this program will be covered by the Monash Student Travel Insurance policy. Be sure to familiarise yourself with the details of the Monash student travel insurance policy. This includes details about cover periods (including personal travel) and a link to the full policy via the Monash Finance Intranet [login required].
Tuition Fees
Monash students will be enrolled in the Unit MED5101 and charged standard fees according to their verified funding status. This fee will appear on their Monash Fee Statement.
Important Note:
The Monash Abroad Travel Grant and OS-HELP loan (if applicable) will be paid approximately 4 weeks prior to program commencement. Therefore, these funds should not be considered as your primary source of funding to pay program related deposits and balances.
Monash Abroad Travel Grant
Monash students studying in Australia who are enrolled in this program will receive a Monash Abroad Travel Grant if they are not otherwise receiving an Australian Government New Colombo Plan, any other scholarship that is intended to cover most or all of your travel/tuition costs for your program or have received a Monash Abroad Travel Grant in their current degree previously.
OS-HELP Loan
OS-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan program that provides financial assistance to eligible Commonwealth Supported Place students, to undertake some of their study overseas.
If you are eligible for the loan and wish to apply, please submit your application as per the relevant OS-HELP loan term deadline, even if you have not been accepted into your overseas program by that deadline.

How to Register
Step 1: Submit an Application
Click the "Register Now" button, select 'Monash led programs' and then choose GIR | Scholarly Intensive Placement for the university to which you have been approved to go. Submit your form by the deadline. Incomplete or unsubmitted registrations will not be accepted after the deadline and you will not be permitted to participate in the program.
Step 2: Commitment and Enrolment
Once Monash Abroad has received your registration form, and checked it is complete and correct, you will receive instructions on how to commit to your place. After this point, your Faculty will enrol you into the associated unit, if not already done.
Step 3: Complete the Travel Approval Request Form
Monash Abroad will invite you to complete the Travel Approval Request Form. Please set aside an hour to complete all of the requirements within this form, including the Pre-departure Online Units in Moodle. Please note that you cannot save your progress within this form.
Once you have submitted your Travel Approval Request, Monash Abroad will assess your application and approve you for travel. We may also contact you and/or your Faculty if we have any questions or concerns that need to be addressed before you are approved for travel. Please note that travel approval takes approximately 1-2 weeks, but may take longer during peak periods. Further delays may be experienced if Monash Abroad needs to contact you for additional information or documentation regarding your placement.
Step 4: Commence overseas placement
Once you are approved for travel, you will be paid any relevant grants, scholarships or loans. You will also be covered by Monash University travel insurance for the duration of your placement.
Important notes
- You must have a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the program end date.
- The delivery of all Monash mobility programs are subject to the advice and requirements of the Australian Government and the requirements of the destination country. Monash may need to cancel or defer planned mobility programs based on these requirements.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This form should only be completed by students who have already been provided with an offer and are enrolled into BIO3820 unit at Clayton.
Step 1: Complete the Monash Abroad Portal (MAP) registration form
Click the ‘Apply Now' button, complete all sections and submit your MAP registration form by the deadline.
Important note: Incomplete or unsubmitted MAP registrations will not be accepted after the deadline and you will not be permitted to participate in the program.
Step 2: Enrolment
After the deadline, your faculty/ies will enrol you into the associated unit and will update your registration status to 'Accepted and Enrolled by Faculty/ies'. This will be confirmed in an email to your student account.
Step 3: Monash Abroad Registration
Once your enrolment is appearing in WES and your MAP status has been changed to 'Accepted and Enrolled by Faculty/ies'; this will be confirmed in an email to your student account. You will then have access to the travel insurance documentation via your MAP application.
