Handbook

Use the Monash online Handbook to see what units are available to study at Monash Malaysia during the semester/s for which you are applying.  You are required to prepare, and have approved by your School, a study plan detailing the units you intend to take while studying at Monash Australia.

When choosing units for your study plan, you should remember the following:

  • Ensure the units are offered at the campus you want to go to and are available in the semester you plan to go.
  • It's often easier to get faculty approval if you study elective units at another campus.
  • Be aware of any unit prerequisites or limitations detailed in the handbook, and make sure you meet these before selecting the unit.
  • Select two or three spare units in case your faculty does not approve all your choices, or there are timetable clashes or cancelled units after you arrive at your host campus.

Accommodation

On-campus

Information about on-campus options can be viewed hereYou do not require an offer for exchange or study abroad to apply for on-campus accommodation; there is no fee to apply. Once applications open, you can go to the website register, and then complete an application, during the registration process you must ensure that you answer that you are a Monash Abroad applicant.  Please note that on-campus accommodation is limited and cannot be guaranteed.

Off-campus

If students choose to live off-campus, they can receive assistance/advice on searching for rental properties, setting up a share house, things to look out for before you sign a contract, an idea of comparable rental costs, how to budget, and how to get the essentials like internet, gas and electricity connected.

Visas

As an intercampus exchange student, it is essential that you enter Australia with a valid visa that entitles you to study up to four months. You will need to await instructions from Monash Abroad before you apply for your Australia visa.

Additionally, under Australian Government visa regulations, all international students must have the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to study in Australia. The purchase of the OSHC is the first step in Monash being able to issue your Certificate of Enrolment (CoE), the document needed to apply for your student visa.

More information on the visa requirements will be provided in your intercampus exchange offer letter.

Health and insurance

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is insurance to assist international students in meeting the costs of medical and hospital care that they may need while in Australia. OSHC will also pay limited benefits for pharmaceuticals and ambulance services. It is a condition of student visas that visa-length OSHC be purchased and maintained for the duration of that visa. Failure to do so will result in students being non-compliant with their visa requirements. Students will be required to purchase OSHC when accepting their offer and more information will be provided with the offer

We strongly encourage students to take out comprehensive travel insurance before they leave for Australia as their OSHC will provide only basic medical and hospital cover while in Australia and does not cover any travel related claims. OSHC does not cover students while travelling to or from Australia, their personal belongings or if they have an emergency and need to return home urgently.

Cost of living

Information about living costs in Melbourne for international students can be found here. This information is primarily for international students completing a full degree at Monash so there may be some variations for Exchange and Study Abroad students.

Holders of an Australian student visa can work part-time for up to 40 hours per fortnight, paid or unpaid, during the semester and full-time after exams have concluded. The visa work regulations place no restrictions on the type or nature of work that the student engages in and can be on or off-campus. Most students who work, find part-time work in the service and hospitality industries.

Funding and fees

One semester studying at one of the Australian campuses will generally cost you approximately A$10,000 – $15,000.  This varies, however, depending on your location in the greater Melbourne area and your individual living standards.

Monash University Malaysia students should note that they are not eligible for funding or financial support from Monash University Australia.

Study experience

I really loved the university culture in Melbourne. The campus was way bigger and so beautiful, and the facilities there were top-notch. I studied BIO2232, BIO2810, BIO2060, and BIO2011. BIO2011 offered three field trips, all of which were very enriching. BIO2231 allowed students ample opportunity to get up close to animal specimens.

Culture

The transport was better, campus was bigger and cleaner, people were more laid-back, nighttime was safer (better night life).

Benefits of going on exchange

It really improved my intercultural skills and made me realise that I shouldn't be too hard on myself when it comes to my studies (I really have to enjoy my youth while I can!!!)

Career benefits

My exchange really enhanced my communication skills, and also made me very independent.

Money and budgeting

Take advantage of the FREE FOOD ON CAMPUS. Join competitions (I won movie tickets just by sending an email to MSA). Make use of student discounts (e.g. student entry prices to museums). Know how the public transport pricing works.

Top Tips

  • Step OUT of your comfort zone.
  • ENJOY yourself. Your exchange period will be over before you know it - don't waste time worrying about anything you won't care about in the future.
  • Take the initiative to talk to people.
  • Explore places on your own and make memories.
  • Research places you want to go, or things you want to do, and be sure to do it
