Ghent University

Ghent University

Ghent University, in Flemish Universiteit Gent, was founded 1817, before the Kingdom of the Belgians existed. In 1930 the University became the first Flemish-speaking university in Belgium prior to which French and Latin were the languages of academe. It is now the second largest university in the country and ranked as one of the best.

Academic Highlights

The University consists of eleven faculties and it maintains two science parks which house several institutes of the University, business incubators and biotech companies which are mainly spin-offs from university research.

Location

The University is located in the once important and rich medieval city of Ghent in East Flanders, a province in the north of Belgium on the Dutch border. Most of its activities take place in and around the city.

Did you know?

After the University opened, the Ghent City Council decided to construct a grand palace for university ceremonies. Designed in the classical style, the Aula Academica was opened in 1826 and became the basis for the University’s logo.
