The First Annual Korean Speech Contest 2018

1st prize: One cheque for $AUS1500.00 ♣

2 Runners up prizes of cheques for $AUS250 ♣

Qualification Round 

To be eligible to compete in the final on September 20, 2018, you will need to pass the qualification round. Send in a video of yourself giving a 3 minute talk in Korean on:

‘To me, Korea means…’

Upload the video to a website of your choice and send the link in your entry email (if you can email the video file directly, you can do this). It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure the link functions so the judges of the preliminary round can view the video online without needing to download the video and without needing to log in.

Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes. No special presentation requirements (for example: Power points etc) are necessary. Videos do not need to be professionally edited. Videos only need show the candidate speaking.

The competition organiser is not responsible for any technical malfunction of any communications network or any late, lost, incorrectly submitted, delayed, ineligible, incomplete, corrupted or misdirected entry whether due to error, transmission, interruption or otherwise.

The time of entry will be deemed to be the time the entry is received by the competition organiser.

Entry Requirements:

1.  Open to all second language learners of Korean who are 18 years of age or over, and currently registered in full-time education at institutions in metropolitan Melbourne.

2.   Only apply for the competition if you are available to attend the final contest on September 20 in person.

3.  The competitor who appears in the video must be the same competitor who is planning to compete in the final.

4.  The talk should be a monologue in Korean by one person on the topic listed above

All competitors will be split into three groups for the qualification round and final competition:

Group 1-less than one year’s experience in learning Korean

Group 2-between 12 and 24 months’ experience in learning Korean

Group 3-more than 24 months’ experience in learning Korean

Judges will select fifteen participants for the final on September 20, 2018 (around five in each category). The selection for the fifteen finalists will be judged by a panel of three Korean language specialists, and this will take place on 29 August at 3pm at Monash University, Clayton.

The judges for the final will be announced at the event on September 20, 2018.

The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Chance plays no part in determining the winning.

In the final on September 20, 2018, one winner will be selected from each category. From these three category winners, the most outstanding candidate will win the first prize, and two other candidates will be awarded runners up prizes. Awards will be made based on:

-Korean language ability (in relation to experience learning Korean)

-originality of content and creativity

Please note: Late entries will NOT be considered.

All successful competitors will be sent an invitation by email by August 31 to compete in the final on September 20, 2018. Successful competitors will then be informed of the topic for the final.
