How to use the dictionary
There are two ways to search for characters by using the dictionary. The first is to search by Korean pronunciation, the second way is to search by character.
If you know the pronunciation of the character you are looking for then you should use the 'Search by Pronunciation' function. If you don't know the pronunciation but only know the character, then you can use the 'Search by Character' function.
The pronunciation of all the characters featured in the dictionary have been organised in Korean alphabetical order. The character is followed by its most common Korean pronunciation. Next, we provide the saegim which shows how the specific character is commonly learned by Korean children. The saegim is followed by the word class of the specific character, for instance, whether it is most commonly used as a verb, adjective, noun or adverb. We provide an English translation of the character and example sentences. All of the sample sentences have been taken from published sources for example the sillok. In most cases, we provide a link to the digitized version of the Korean Hanmun source.
If you are not familiar with the character's pronunciation then you can perform a character search, by going to the 'Search by Character' page and then try a Ctl F search using the character. If the character is featured in the dictionary, then the correct pronunciation will be indicated. You should then perform a second search using the 'Search by pronunciation' function.
