Korean Studies Student Support 2018-2022

Monash University Korean Studies has been providing financial assistance to students who wish to study Korean or conduct research related to Korean Studies. As of October 2021, we have awarded $54,000 in bursaries to 24 different students.

Since the global pandemic in 2020, we have established two new award streams – the best student achievement award and the indigenous award. Awards have been given to students majoring in Korean who received the highest grade in Korean Studies units, as well as to an Indigenous Australian student who is majoring in Korean Studies. The first indigenous award has been awarded to Grace King, a third-year student who is currently completing her BA in Korean studies. Two other awards will be given to the two students majoring in Korean who received the best-combined mark in Korean Studies units over two semesters and will be announced in December 2021.

As awardees, students will receive a prize and will have the award recorded on their academic transcripts.

Korean Studies Student Awards

We awarded a total of $17000 to financially support undergraduate students in our Korean Studies program. This year, these funds were awarded via three distinct programs:

  1. Monash Academy of Korean Studies Indigenous Award: This award, worth $5000, was presented to an indigenous Australian student in Korean Studies who demonstrated high academic performance and commitment to Korean Studies. The aim of the award is to encourage more indigenous Australian students to pursue high level academic work in Korean Studies.
  2. Monash Academy of Korean Studies Student Support: These funds were awarded to four students ($1500 each) who were undertaking individually-sourced language study in South Korea during the vacation period. The reason for using the funds in this way is that many of our students were unable to study abroad via university programs due to ongoing repercussions from the COVID-19 pandemic.
  3. Monash AKS Korean Studies Prize: Prizes of $1500 each were awarded to the final-year students in our program who obtained the highest marks in their Korean Studies units (averaged over at least two units). These prizes are designed to encourage students to study more units in Korean Studies and to work hard in the units that they take.

The names of the awardees for these different funds are given below:

Support for Korean Studies Students

In addition, we provided AUS$12,000 to support undergraduate student language study and research. In 2021, because the COVID-19 Pandemic has prevented students from travelling overseas to study Korean language study, field trips or archival research abroad, we have altered the manner in which students are funded and we are therefore supporting students on the basis of the highest scoring Korean Studies major students. The aim is to encourage other students to study harder in Korean Studies. These awards will be made at the end of Semester 2 (November 2021), once all grades have been finalized.

In 2021, we began an indigenous award scheme to help expand interest in Korea from within indigenous communities. We are the first university in Australia to offer a Korean Studies scholarship to indigenous Australians. This is particularly significant since there is a history of underrepresentation of indigenous Australians in academia.
