Hampton Park Library 2026 Semester 2 Report

Monash Korean Studies continued its weekly Korean language and cultural classes at Hampton Park Library this semester. The program ran from 30 July to 17 September and consisted of eight lessons. The program was coordinated by Hub Coordinator Sandy Nguyen, with In-Class Support Students Sharee Zhang and Lucinda (Lucy) Gardiner developing and delivering the lesson materials.

The program received positive feedback from both the library and participants, with interest in continuing the program next year with more advanced Korean language materials and lessons. Average attendance was 5–6 participants per week, with the majority of participants continuing from the previous semester.

The weekly lessons covered a range of Korean language and cultural topics, including:

  • Revision and reading: Revising sound shifts and practising Korean reading
  • Talking about hobbies: Vocabulary related to hobbies and introducing the grammar form “-할 거예요”
  • Talking about the weather: Introducing the seasons and vocabulary for describing the weather
  • Telling the time and date: Revising Korean number systems and practising essential phrases for asking and telling the time
  • Family tree: Family-related nouns and language formality, including polite and casual forms
  • Introducing particles: Topic markers 은/는 and subject markers 이/가
  • Body parts: Vocabulary and essential phrases related to health and medical needs
  • Reading practice and present tense: Further reading practice and an introduction to the present tense

Below, Sharee and Lucy reflect on their teaching experiences at Hampton Park Library this semester:

"This semester I had the wonderful opportunity to rejoin the Korean teaching team at Hampton Park Library. This experience has helped me refine my Korean language, teaching, and public speaking skills. It was also lovely to see some familiar faces as students from last semester had come to join us again for this teaching period. All the students started without knowing any Hangul and can now form basic sentences and have conversations! Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Everyone is incredibly inquisitive, which makes the environment very comfortable and easy to teach in. I hope we continue running this program, as it is such a good opportunity for TAs to practice teaching Korean and a good way for people to find community." - Sharee

The program will continue in Term 2, 2027, running from 14 April to 26 May.
