Congratulations to our Korean studies student Belinda Rowlands on receiving the annual AAA (Australian Asian Association) of Victoria's Language Award 2025 for Korean language!

Here's what Belinda has shared about receiving the award and studying Korean at Monash University:

"I felt very honoured and grateful to receive the award. I take great pride in being able and wanting to learn a new language, and the way Korean has been taught at Monash so far has really made it fun, engaging and me wanting to go to all my classes. I'm excited for the future, and know that I am definitely going to use and be able to interact on a deeper level, understanding the language, culture and customs, travelling to Korea and potentially using it in my future career. Ultimately, I was pleasantly surprised to receive the award, and am proud that my hardwork has been recognised and I hope I continue to surpass expectations."

We are delighted to announce that on October 9, 2025 Associate Professor Andrew David Jackson received the Prime Minister’s Commendation award (국무총리 표창) from the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Kim Min-seok, at the 2025 Hangul Development Merit Awards (한글발전유공포상)in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promoting Korean language education and expanding Korean Studies overseas.

This commendation recognises A/Professor Jackson’s long-standing commitment to expanding Korean Studies at Monash and in the community which has included (amongst other things) the establishment of:

  • an annual Korean Speech Contest
  • an annual Korea Week celebrating all things Korean
  • an outreach Korean language and education program in the local community
  • the publication of a Korean language textbook – Korean Conversation Gambits.

Congratulations to our Korean studies student Tristan Broekhoff on receiving the Australian Asian Association of Victoria's Language Award 2024 for Korean language! The awards ceremony took place on Monday 4th November 2024.

Here's what Tristan has shared about receiving the award and studying Korean at Monash University:

"Being nominated for the Australian Asian Association Language Awards was a very honourable experience for me. Studying Korean at Monash University has been trialling and testing, however discovering that my tutors and the faculty of the Korean Department at Monash University have seen potential in my future studies has meant a lot to me. This knowledge has helped me plan to continue my studies once I graduate, and I'm excited to use these skills during my inevitable journeys to South Korea!"
