Monash University has renewed its affiliation with Australia’s only public health service dedicated to cancer, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac), to further advance knowledge in cancer care, treatment, research and education.

Monash University Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Christina Mitchell AO, and CEO of Peter Mac Professor Shelley Dolan, today signed an Affiliation Agreement at Peter Mac’s Parkville campus, continuing a successful collaboration that first began in 2017.

The two institutions will continue working together to build on proven areas of leadership and capability in cancer research and care, with the collaboration expected to result in breakthroughs on future treatments and models of patient care, while also playing a significant role in training the next generation of cancer clinicians and scientists.

Co-chaired working groups have been established to address four areas of focus, including cancer research and translational discovery, education and higher degrees, clinical placements and health services and implementation science research.

Co-Head of the Cancer Program at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute and the Co-Chair of the affiliation’s Discovery, Clinical and Translational Research Working Group Associate Professor Renea Taylor, said that the renewed agreement was a testament to the strong and productive partnership between Monash and Peter Mac.

“We are delighted to continue working together to advance knowledge in cancer research and care, and provide high-quality learning opportunities for our students,” Associate Professor Taylor said.

Monash University Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences,  Professor Christina Mitchell AO said that innovative, new ideas that have the greatest potential to advance cancer research and improve clinical outcomes are possible when the brightest minds in basic lab-based research work closely with talented clinicians.

“This collaboration has the potential to accelerate the pace of cancer research by bringing teams together from two great institutions,” she said.

Peter Mac Chief Executive Professor Shelley Dolan said the Affiliation Agreement was a significant step that would accelerate the achievements of these two leading organisations.

“We are delighted to embark on this expanded partnership with Monash University, which reflects the strong collaborations that our people have shared for many years,” Professor Dolan said.

“Working together helps both organisations to progress our shared goals of advancing cancer treatment and research, and of building a bigger and more equipped healthcare workforce in Victoria.”
