Why should you choose this discipline?
Understanding the biological development of humans will equip you to tackle many of the current challenges in biomedical science, such as tissue engineering, regenerative therapies, stem cell bioethics, and understanding how abnormalities in genetic and environmental regulation lead to birth defects
and adult disease. By choosing this discipline, you’ll be joining an internationally recognised Department that has conducted renowned research on stem cells and regeneration, reproductive health, fertility and IVF, kidney disease and development, genetics and human development.

Why should you choose this discipline?
Biochemistry and molecular biology are closely-related disciplines which study the chemical components of living cells, including the genetic material, in order to understand biological processes and how these are altered in disease. Understanding the processes at a molecular level, such as cell signalling and metabolism, and – perhaps more importantly – the consequences when these processes go wrong, helps us understand the basis of human disease and to pursue the development of effective treatment processes. In joining us, you will be contributing to research that is highly relevant to major human diseases and pathological processes, including infection, inflammation, diabetes and obesity, developmental and degenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
The Department has been ranked as the premier Department in its discipline since the inception of ARC benchmarking of Australian Departments in 1998.

Why should you choose this discipline?
Microbiologists aim to understand how microbes interact with their human or animal hosts at the molecular level, in both harmful and beneficial ways. Microbiology impacts on a wide range of areas, including human and animal health, the environment, food technology and safety, and the biotechnology industry. The importance of understanding microorganisms is even more critical today than ever before with the rise and global spread of ‘superbugs’ (antimicrobial/antibiotic resistant) and infectious diseases (whether caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites), and the need to provide alternate sources of fuel. By choosing this discipline, you’ll be joining a highly-regarded, research-active Department strongly supported by considerable external research funding, and you’ll be working alongside approachable and inspiring researchers.

Pharmacology studies the effects of drugs – whether natural or synthetic - on living organisms. You’ll be contributing to our understanding of how drugs can be used to treat specific diseases and what new therapeutics and drug-targets can be developed. Whether you are interested in venoms and toxins, or the pharmacology and biology of heart, lung and kidney diseases, we have a diverse range of exciting research projects involving a wide-range of techniques for you to consider. Whether you are interested in heart or kidney disease, infertility and reproductive physiology, ageing, obesity, sleep and sleep disorders, or sensory and cognitive neuroscience, we have a diverse range of exciting research projects involving a wide-range of techniques for you to consider.
