“The Work Integrated Learning unit really opened my eyes to what career possibilities there can be after a Biomed degree. I wasn’t well versed in options that weren’t research or healthcare-related but through my experience, my placement and conversations with peers, I discovered a wide range of roles that can stem from a Biomed degree. This included pharma marketing, market research, biotech, and so many more. The exposure the placement gave me into the lab product manufacturing, market research, and associated technologies was phenomenal. This experience helped me to appreciate roles in healthcare more.”

“I did this unit at the end of my second year. The course helped me learn how to be more professional in a lab setting, as compared to student relationships in school. I became more familiar with the field, writing literature reports and running extensive research on other papers and so on, it was different from what we do in biomed classes.

For anyone interested in research, this unit is a good place to develop skills early on, such as doing injections, doing surgery on mice… It also helped me develop my communication skills, communicating with my supervisors and other PhD students.

I recommend this unit to students to experience lab research in the real world. Being put into that professional setting can be an eye opener. It’s good to have that experience for students to try research before committing to hours or postgraduate.”

“The RED unit is an opportunity to get involved in researching real life social changes, which intrigued me as I am interested in pursuing research after my degree. I was involved in a research project over the winter semester at the Victorian Heart Hospital. I was also able to converse with panel speakers about various subjects, such as how architecture and funding in rural communities influences the outreach of the Mobile health clinic. I also enjoyed documenting our project on social media. I learnt how to reflect on what I had learnt and evaluate my experiences during and after the RED units, so that I can apply my insight into future situations. Doing this unit improved my problem-solving and decision-making skills. I experienced significant personal growth and was able to understand my strengths after doing the RED.”
