Discovery Programs
Tackling the big challenges in biomedical research is no longer the domain of a single discipline. Can immunity be used to target cancer? Do stem cells offer hope for treating asthma? Solutions don’t work in isolation and neither do we.
Cancer
One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Yet, there remains an unmet clinical need in treating cancers. We're combining efforts to close that gap, to understand the molecular basis of how cancers develop and progress.
Cardiovascular disease
We bring critical mass to the areas of stroke and hypertension, atherosclerosis, fibrosis and kidney disease with a cross-disciplinary approach intrinsic to all BDI programs.
Development and stem cells
In collaboration with the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute, we're recognised as the leading developmental biology and stem cell community in Australia – and one of the strongest globally.
Immunity
We are unlocking the power of the immune system to transform human health. Working across autoimmunity, infection, cancer and inflammation, our researchers uncover the causes of disease and pioneer new ways to harness immunity to fight illness, improve treatments and prevent harmful immune responses.
Infection
Our researchers explore the biology of both beneficial and harmful microbes to combat disease, curb antimicrobial resistance and prevent major infectious threats. By uncovering microbial function, host-pathogen interactions and environmental dynamics, we create knowledge to design next-generation biochemical and microbial solutions for global challenges in planetary and human health.
Metabolism, diabetes and obesity
Regarded as the epidemic of the 21st century, we're unravelling the complexities of what causes metabolic diseases and obesity and how they contribute to other diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cancer.
Neuroscience
By 2050, it's forecast 100 million of us will be living with Alzheimer's. So we're testing new treatments for neural dysfunction with a focus on pharmacology and the rapidly emerging field of Brain Computer Interfaces.
