Institute’s Open Day 2024: A thrilling exploration of biomedical sciences
In early August, Monash University’s Clayton campus transformed into a vibrant hub of excitement and discovery as it hosted the highly-anticipated Open Day 2024. The Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) welcomed thousands of prospective students, families, and friends for a day filled with engaging activities and insightful interactions.
The Biomedical Learning and Teaching Building (BLTB) buzzed with energy as visitors delved into a myriad of hands-on experiences. One standout activity was the chance to create personalised streak plates using colourful puffy paint, allowing participants to get creative while learning about microbiology.
Professor Chris Thompson, Director of Education for Biomedical Sciences at Monash BDI, praised the remarkable enthusiasm and dedication of the staff and student volunteers who played a crucial role in making the event a success.
“Open Day at Monash BDI was a tremendous achievement, thanks to the passion and commitment of our team. It’s vital to inspire and attract the next generation of biomedical scientists,” said Professor Thompson.
“Our work addresses global challenges, from infectious diseases to environmental health issues, and it’s crucial to engage future leaders in these critical fields,” he said.
“It was wonderful to see so many people on campus, exploring our facilities and learning about our world-leading programs. This event provided a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant life of our Biomedical Science programs.”
The event offered a dynamic blend of academic and extra-curricular experiences. Visitors explored the latest in biomedical research through interactive displays and activities that spanned the seven key disciplines of biomedical science. Highlights included an anatomical challenge to correctly position organs, a fun game distinguishing between drug names and Pokémon, and a look into the fascinating world of fluorescent proteins used in cutting-edge research.
Attendees had the chance to tour all levels of the state-of-the-art BLTB, including laboratories, breakout rooms, and the student lounge. More than 100 staff and students were on hand to provide tours and answer questions, showcasing Monash’s top-tier facilities and the supportive learning environment, and visitors enjoyed informal chats with students in the lounge.
Natalie Seng, Manager of the BDI Education and Student Support Team (BESST) and organiser of the event, reflected on the day’s success.
“It was an incredible team effort, and working with our enthusiastic student volunteers was truly rewarding. They provided an authentic glimpse into the university experience, showing that university life extends beyond academics to encompass personal growth and professional Development.”
Overall, Monash BDI’s Open Day 2024 was a resounding success, leaving visitors inspired and eager to explore future opportunities within the field of biomedical sciences.
