Ikhtiar Uddin Iasir

For Ikhtiar Uddin Iasir, health has never been a static concept or an isolated scientific formula. It is an intricate web connecting research, technology, systems, and—most importantly—the diverse communities that depend on them.

Growing up multicultural and multilingual in Indonesia, Ikhtiar learned early on to view the world through multiple lenses. Living across different cultural and educational environments instilled in him a deep appreciation for both the immense possibilities and systemic challenges that shape human lives across the region.

As a young student, Ikhtiar envisioned a future sitting at the crossroads of science, healthcare, and innovation, driven by a simple ambition: to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

"When I was younger, I thought university was simply a destination—a place you went to become a professional researcher after finishing school," Ikhtiar reflects. "Over time, I realised university isn't just about arriving at a predetermined career. It's a bridge between curiosity and purpose."

After completing his undergraduate degree in Medical Bioscience, Ikhtiar found himself at a pivotal crossroads. While he loved understanding health at a cellular and biological level, he felt drawn to the broader picture—asking why certain communities experience better health outcomes than others, and how research can be turned into large-scale, practical solutions.

Choosing to step outside his comfort zone, he enrolled in the Master of Public Health at Monash University, Indonesia.

Stepping into public health required a fundamental shift in perspective. Instead of focusing solely on disease mechanisms inside the human body, Ikhtiar was challenged to zoom out and examine how policy, socioeconomic conditions, environment, and culture shape wellbeing on a systemic scale.

Navigating this transition meant balancing rigorous academic demands with his passion for volunteering, student leadership, first aid, and exploring the potential of digital health technologies.

During his early days in the program, a conversation with an educator helped him navigate his wide-ranging ambitions.

Belonging isn't about the campus—it's about the people who remember your name and welcome you genuinely.

The educator asked Ikhtiar a straightforward question: "Where do you see yourself after you graduate? Do you see yourself in Academia or Industry?"

"It sounded like a binary question at first," Ikhtiar says. "For a long time, I thought being successful meant picking one single path and sticking to it. But that conversation made me realise that having diverse interests wasn't a lack of direction—it could be my greatest strength."

Rather than choosing between science, research, technology, and community engagement, Ikhtiar learned to see public health as the very space where all these passions intersect.

That sense of clarity was matched by a profound sense of belonging on campus. From his first orientation days at Monash University, Indonesia, when senior students warmly guided his registration and university staff actively connected him to professional development and volunteering opportunities, Ikhtiar felt immediately included.

"What made me feel that I belonged wasn't just the campus itself," he explains. "It was the people who made the effort to include me—the ones who remembered my name, offered support, and were genuinely excited to see me succeed."

Today, as he actively contributes to the Monash community through leadership, event organization, and academic initiative, Ikhtiar looks forward to a future dedicated to building healthier, more resilient communities across Indonesia and the region.

"University taught me that education isn't about fitting into a box," Ikhtiar says. "It's about giving yourself the confidence to keep asking questions, embrace new opportunities, and discover where you can make the greatest impact."
