Join long-term friends and collaborators Gabrielle Brand & Steve Wise for a taste of Depth of Field — a growing body of Health Humanities research that integrates art (photography, fine art, music, film and literature) and patient narratives to foster new ways of seeing, knowing, and understanding health. Depth of Field is a co-design methodology that draws on narrative portraiture to bridge clinical and human experiences of healthcare. At its core, this humanistic approach to healthcare education is underpinned by stories of strength, hope, and possibility and has been found to cultivate more person-centred, empathetic and reflective practitioners equipped to address the complex needs of diverse populations.

In this interactive keynote address, Gabrielle & Steve will share the Depth of Field creative process, including the intersection between narrative, storytelling, fine art photography, research and healthcare. Drawing on live interviews from the health professionals featured in the Depth of Field: ‘Baring’ Witness exhibition, we will explore what it means to be human as we uncover and expose one of the narrative portraits for the first time and in doing so discover the power of art and voice to transform our own depth of field.
