There are two core units focusing on cancer nursing in the course. These units are:
Cancer Nursing 1
This unit introduces the advanced knowledge and skill required of specialist cancer nurses, enabling you to implement contemporary and advanced nursing practice to provide optimal and holistic, patient-centred care. You will develop an understanding of the epidemiology of cancer across the lifespan, diagnosis of cancer and goals of care, evidence-based treatment of cancer including new and emerging treatment, effective nursing management of complications of cancer and treatment including oncology emergencies.
Cancer Nursing 2
This unit builds upon the foundations established in Cancer Nursing 1 and extends knowledge of advanced cancer nursing care using an evidence-based approach. This unit will prepare you to provide advanced care to cancer patients, from all socioeconomic groups, within the context of cultural safety. Symptomatic management in end of life care is considered in addition to contemporary end of life care provision including voluntary assisted dying.
Both units are 12 credit points and on successful completion, you will be eligible to graduate with a Graduate certificate of advanced clinical nursing.
Should you wish to undertake further study and progress toward a higher qualification, pathways exist for you to continue your education in a Graduate Diploma or Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing. Further information is available in the course handbook.
