Intensive care nursing

There are two core units focusing on Intensive care nursing in the course. These units are:

Intensive care nursing 1

This unit develops the advanced assessment, clinical decision-making, and nursing skills required to care for critically ill patients with single organ failure. Combining evidence-based practice with real-world ICU scenarios, you'll learn to manage complex interventions and life-support technologies while delivering safe, patient- and family-centred care. You'll also explore the evolving role of the specialist ICU nurse and build the confidence to work effectively within multidisciplinary critical care teams.

Intensive care nursing 2

This unit advances your intensive care expertise, preparing you to assess and manage critically ill patients with complex, multi-organ dysfunction. Through a focus on advanced therapies, clinical decision-making, and evidence-based practice, you'll develop the skills needed to evaluate and deliver high-quality care in challenging ICU environments. You'll also explore the ethical, psychosocial, and end-of-life considerations that shape critical care nursing, while strengthening your leadership capabilities and ability to support patients and families from diverse backgrounds.

Both units are 12 credit points and on successful completion, you will be eligible to graduate with a Graduate certificate of advanced clinical nursing.

In the Intensive care nursing specialisation you will:

• Develop advanced assessment skills and a core set of nursing care capabilities required for the management of the critically ill patient.
• Gain leadership skills in intensive care nursing management to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate health care.
• Develop core skills and appropriately assess and manage disease processes and measure efficacy of interventions, with a focus on the applied psychosocial and ethical elements of intensive care nursing.
