Monash DeepNeuron Team Receives Award at 8th APAC HPC-AI Competition

16 February 2026

We continue celebrating our Monash students from the DeepNeuron team, who won third place in the 8th APAC HPC-AI Competition!

DeepNeuron Students in Japan

Organised by the HPC-AI Advisory Council, with support from the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore and the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) Australia, the competition highlights the growing importance of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence in advancing science.

As the demand for greater computational performance increases and research problems become more complex, scientific computing continues to evolve at a rapid pace.

In this year’s competition, the Monash DeepNeuron team secured third place in a competitive field of 49 university teams from across the region. This marks the third consecutive year the team has received recognition in the competition. The students travelled to Japan to attend the SupercomputingAsia Conference 2026 and receive their award. Their participation was supported by a grant from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty Student Teams at Monash University.

The team’s success builds on many years of hard work by previous Monash students. The contest team is part of a larger Engineering team at Monash (deepneuron.org/) focused on improving the world through artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).

This diverse team draws on motivated students from all faculties and is responsible for its own training and project selection. DeepNeuron acknowledges the support of Monash eResearch and Mr Simon Michnowicz, who has supervised contest teams since 2018 and is passionate about training the next generation of HPC specialists.
