Research Actions

Urban-Rural Mosaic brings together a diverse range of expertise—from local communities to global specialists—working side by side to transform development across scales.

We’re building a dynamic platform where a suite of fixed-term projects integrate with long-term (20 year) goals. Powered by a cutting-edge data commons, each project is designed to complement the next, creating a network that’s more than the sum of its parts—like a vibrant mosaic, full of life and possibility.

This project centres on creating healthy homes as the foundation for resilient, compact neighbourhoods and integrated districts that promote well-being and mitigate non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
We will design and pilot walkable districts, placing healthy homes at their core, supported by accessible public spaces, green areas, and integrated health services. In doing so, we also address broader challenges such as urban sprawl and limited green space.
These prototypes will be evaluated for their impact on physical activity, air quality, and community well-being. The project will assess health outcomes and quality of life to optimise future models, contributing to sustainable, health-focused urban development in Banten and beyond.
Mixed-use neighbourhoods combine residential spaces with micro- and medium-enterprises focused on food innovation, creative industries, advanced technical services like computing and software development, digital manufacturing, and sustainable production.
We demonstrate how these neighbourhoods become even more resilient through compact design and decentralised technologies for energy, water, waste management, and local food production.
Integrated networks are key to improving the flow of goods, services, and expanding employment catchment areas.
Combining regional polycentric and 15-minute town principles, this research integrates networks and land-use strategies to create an efficient, interconnected transit system. We are adapting these concepts to Banten’s conditions, with a focus on electric and active mobility.
This research tackles two key challenges: enhancing ecological connectivity and strengthening Banten’s role as a key food producer within the context of local and national food security.
We will explore emerging technologies, precision agriculture, and agroecological principles top promote sustainable intensification and ecological resilience.
Focusing on everything from large-scale farms to small-holder plots and peri-urban areas, we integrate agropolitan and minapolitan strategies to link urban, rural and marine food systems. Through orchards, allotments, and community-based farming, we aim to boost both ecological sustainability and farmers’ livelihoods, while ensuring ecological connectivity for non- human communities to strengthen biodiversity and land stewardship.
Labuan port, the towns of Malimping and Bojong (gateway to the Badui area), Ujung Kulon National Park, and the Bayah Geodome are underdeveloped destinations in Banten.
We are designing blue-green networks that integrate eco-cultural sites with renewable energy systems and innovative resource management principles. We retrofithistoric structures, implement acupunctural development, and design new buildings as catalysts for long-term, resilient development.
