Established in 2022, IFAR Monash University, Indonesia is part of the broader IFAR Consortium, a network of Indonesian university partners initiated by the Indonesian Scholarship and Research Support Foundation (ISRSF) in December 2021. This Consortium comprises universities that have set up an Institute for Advanced Research (IFAR) on their campuses, dedicated to fostering excellence in research and intellectual development, particularly in the social sciences and humanities.

The foundation for IFAR Monash University, Indonesia was laid in the previous decade, beginning with the Arryman Scholars Initiative in 2012. ISRSF—a non-profit and non-partisan philanthropic organisation—channels financial support from a diverse group of donors to Indonesian scholars pursuing their doctoral studies in anthropology, history, political science, and sociology at Northwestern University. The Initiative has since expanded to include MSc-PhD funding at the Department of Economics at SOAS University of London.

The IFAR Consortium aims to establish institutional support within Indonesia, ensuring the sustainability of the Arryman Initiative. It provides a platform where Arryman Scholars and their IFAR colleagues can flourish as researchers and educators, contributing to impactful scholarship in Indonesia and internationally.

IFAR Monash University, Indonesia is affiliated with the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs and the Equality Development and Globalization Studies (EDGS) program at Northwestern University. This partnership offers visiting scholar opportunities for IFAR Consortium researchers and facilitates access to Northwestern University and the Buffett Institute’s resources and academic community.

IFAR Monash University, Indonesia emphasises interdisciplinary perspectives to advance research in urban transformation, digital societies, inclusive communities, and environmental humanities. It also serves as a platform for discussion, reflection, and action.
