Eastern Clinical Research Unit

ECRU provides expert service in clinical trials for health organisations and the biotechnology sector, as well as support for independent principal investigator-driven studies. ECRU is involved in more than 150 active clinical trials, with more than 1,500 patients. A large team of over 40 clinical trial coordinators work with a variety of investigating groups.

ECRU Translational Research Division, under the direction of Associate Professor Anthony Dear, is the development arm of ECRU which conducts a number of translational research projects in multiple disciplines.  ECRU Translational Research Division maintains their laboratories at the Alfred Hospital.

Cardiology

Clinical research continues to be a vital aspect of our department. There were many people who were involved in conducting research including our research coordinators, medical students, junior medical staff, and cardiology advanced trainees.

Dermatology

We are currently leading a multicentre study examining comorbidities and disparities in health care of inflammatory dermatoses with a particular focus on atopic dermatitis.

Endocrinology and Diabetes

The endocrinology unit services patients in our region with endocrine disorders including diabetes, thyroid disorders, metabolic bone disease, pituitary and and adrenal disease, and dyslipidaemias.

Gastroenterology and Hepatology

We deliver the highest standards of patient care in gastroenterology. We are at the forefront of medical management and we aim to give our clients the opportunity to participate in innovative new treatment options.

The Neurosciences unit conducts a number of studies involving Stroke (including acute and secondary prevention); Multiple Sclerosis; and Epilepsy and Dementia.

Oncology

The Oncology Trials Unit has built a strong relationship with pharmaceutical companies and leading academic institutions, to coordinate a variety of clinical trials that hope to benefit Oncology patients.

Renal

Renal research units include haemodialysis units, dialysis service, pre and post renal transplantation care, a large dialysis program, eight outpatient clinics, an in-patient care and a comprehensive service for pregnant women with medical disorders.

Respiratory and Sleep Medicine

The Sleep Research program continues to focus on barriers to sleep in hospital for both patients and healthcare workers in collaboration with Turning Point and the Sleep Health Foundation.

Rheumatology

The Rheumatology unit research interests in the areas of back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, psoriatic arthritis, and lupus.
