Monash Abroad Travel Grant
The Monash Abroad Travel Grant (Monash Australia) supports you in accessing a selection of global programs, including Semester Exchange, Global Study Tours, Global Campus Intensives and the Global Intercampus Program.
Two funding bands are awarded, currently set at $2,500 for ‘Band A’ programs and $1,250 for ‘Band B’, with the majority of programs being funded at grant ‘Band B’. Grant bands are re-reviewed annually. You should return to this page for advice relevant to your departure year.
Funding for which you are eligible is typically deposited into your bank account two (2) to four (4) weeks before your program commences. It's important to note that these funds serve to reimburse you for expenses incurred and should not be considered your primary source of funding for program-related deposits and balances.
Additional funding
While the grant will cover/reimburse you for some of your program expenses, it may not cover the whole cost. If a Monash Abroad Travel Grant is not available for your selected program or additional funding is required, other funding sources and options may be available.
It's a good idea to research all forms of funding that may be available to you, noting in some instances it is possible to receive more than one scholarship or grant at a time.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Monash Abroad Travel Grant (Monash Australia) you must:
- be enrolled as an award coursework student at a Monash Australia campus; be approved by Monash Abroad to go on a non-award overseas program that is eligible for funding (see table below).
You are not eligible for a Monash Abroad Travel Grant if:
- you are on intermission during your overseas program;
- you are enrolled at Monash Malaysia (different funding benefits apply there, contact your local Monash Abroad office for advice on what grants are available);
- you are doing an Independent Study Abroad program, excluding ACICIS, that is you are paying fees to the host institution overseas, for non-award study to be credited to your Monash degree;
- your overseas program counts as study towards a dual degree arrangement between Monash University and an overseas institution; or
- from 2023, if you have already received a Monash Abroad Travel Grant in your current degree/diploma (exceptions may apply to Band A programs, refer to the table below).
How to apply
When you apply or are approved for a program that is eligible for funding through Monash Abroad, you're automatically assessed for the Monash Abroad Travel Grant (Monash Australia). If you meet the eligibility requirements and complete required tasks as per your program type (see below), you will be awarded the grant, usually (2) two to four (4) weeks prior to program commencement.
Note: the below arrangements apply for funding for 2024 only. Monash Abroad Travel Grant amounts, eligibility and funding bands are reviewed annually in October/November and may be subject to change.
When you will be paid
The final phase of the Monash Abroad process is the pre-departure and travel approval phase. This occurs approximately four (4) to six (6) weeks before your program start date, during which you are assessed for the Monash Abroad Travel Grant and/or other funding sources managed by Monash Abroad (such as OS-HELP, New Colombo Plan, etc.).
Any applicable funding will be disbursed approximately two (2) to four (4) weeks prior to the program commencement, contingent upon the completion of all Monash Abroad requirements by you. It's important to note that these funds serve to reimburse you for expenses incurred and should not be considered your primary source of funding for program-related deposits and balances.
How to get paid
Below are the requirements Monash Abroad will assess prior to payment of the Monash Abroad Grant:
- Enrolment in the unit/s associated with your overseas program;
- Completion of the Monash Abroad Pre-departure Training on Moodle; and
- Completion of the Travel Approval Request Form and confirmation of 'Approved for Travel' by Monash Abroad.
For New Colombo Plan (NCP) funded students, completion of the Monash Abroad DFAT Pre-departure Training on Moodle and acceptance of the NCP Letter of Offer is also required for payment of the NCP Grant.
Once you have completed the above requirements and your eligibility has been confirmed*, you will be notified and invited by the Coursework Scholarships Unit (CSU) to confirm your bank details through Monash’s secure payment system by the given deadline - if you already have banking details in WES for other scholarship payments you are currently receiving or have received from the university in the past, you will not receive an email from CSU.
It will take a minimum of two (2) weeks from the time you provide your banking details to receive funds in your nominated account. Failure to do this by the deadline given by CSU will result in a delay in your grant payment. Please note that Monash Abroad WILL NOT process your travel grant payment retrospectively after your program's end date.
Failure to complete these requirements, or complete them during or after your overseas experience, will result in you not being issued with any applicable payments, grants or scholarships.
